Right back options

I think it’s pretty clear we won’t be buying any more none English players. We’ve already got to get rid of 3 or 4? or not include them in the Champs league squad
Exactly, if Livramento isn't attainable, and with Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League, I don't see why he would be, we'll have to make do with what we have. Next summer, when a few contracts expire, may be the moment to look for a new right back.

Just a thought.

Maybe it's not WHO's playing but HOW we play.

No insane soul on here would suggest Cancelo is a great defender, right? He was great going forward for us but defensively - regular horror show.

Vs City, he nearly didn't put a foot in our half to help double down Doku and close our left wing.
And fukc me he did.

If we want to minimize the biggest threat of an opponent we should have the manager in place to sort that out. We sometimes do the opposite and play exactly the way the other side is hoping for.

In late winter Pep changed our defensive setup and shock horror we improved significantly at the back.

Now I had hope with new staff coaches we won't do the open field invitations anymore. It's a big blow for me to see the same mistakes. Will it ever change?

In open space no CB can shine, nor fullbacks. Against good and pacy wingers you just will look very very poor most of the time.

There’s no reason why Gvardiol can’t pay right back as an option. He’s very two footed - nearly all his none headed goals have come from his right foot. You wouldn’t want this as a regular tactic, but if we don’t sign another right back, in some games Gvardiol at RB, Ait-N at LB and two of our multitude of CB’s would be a good option IMO

He is Dutch. Im sure 99% of City fans understand, that we will not be buying another Non home grown/English player. The squad is too full of foreigners already.

Dumfries is 29 years old. We aren't a retirement home for ageing stars. We are better than that. Would be a waste of a non home grown spot.

Go for Livramento, if we can't get a home grown player, try Vanderson (only if we could work something out).

Agreed. It's just a made up rumour. No way in hell we are buying a NHG player, sure as hell not a 29 year old.

I really tried to get on board with the Livramento hype, but I just can’t. Especially not for the kind of absurd figures being thrown around here. When a player's value doubles or more- just because of his passport, I lose interest. He’s a decent player, but nothing beyond that. Is he worth €80 million? Absolutely not.

The only way I’d consider this deal is if we offload players we’re already looking to move like Grealish or McAtee, or ones we can afford to part with, like Akanji or Kovačić. Otherwise, I’d stick with Nunes.

A few months ago, I wouldn’t have believed I’d say this, but I see real progress in him. He’s got pace, physical strength, and contributes well in attack. Give him a few more months in this position which is still relatively new for someone who’s been a midfielder his whole career and I think he could become a great player.

Ok where's the data for this then seeing as you seem to know it?

Valid point.

Again, the numbers to back this up would be nice. And in fairness you would normally expect a guy who's naturally a midfielder to have better attacking numbers than a natural full back.

Nunes is braindead at times. But thats made worse by the fact he isnt a natural fullback and he gets caught out in ways a proper full back who knows the position wouldn't. You protest that Nunes is a full back because he's done a job there for 6 months. That doesn't make him a full back any more than it made Delph a natural left back when he did a job there for us for a year. Dumfries' advantage in that area is that that is his trade by nature.
Yes I have seen him play. I don't agree he's technically poor. Perhaps not as smooth on the ball as Nunes but competent enough. He was a standout for Inter in their champs lge run last season and in particular in both games against Barca he was an utter menace against them.

Maybe for some people but not for me. My view is based solely on what I've seen of both of them in the last year or so. If you were to say Nunes is a decent option to draft into that area of the pitch if a proper first choice RB came in and got injured then I'd have no issues with that personally because he on the whole did a decent job there last season all things considered, but going into next season with him as the first pick in that position? Over the course of a long season where we want to be challenging for trophies again I believe that's asking for trouble.
To be honest, I can't be arsed going to find a load of data, it's out there if you want it or doubt what i said. Nunes is the second fastest player in our league, hes deceptively rapid! I do think the extra pace actually matters because wingers are typically the fastest players and that speed is the difference between just keeping pace and catching somebody but to refer back to the point with his height and strength, Nunes' pace isnt a concern.

Nunes might be a natural midfielder but hes not playing there, hes playing fullback, Dumfries is playing as a wingback and has the advantage of being further up the pitch yet still isnt producing the g&a as often as Nunes.

Dumfries had a few eye catching performances last season in the CL and comfortably had the best season of his career overall but go back 12 months and Inter fans didnt even rate him above the ex rag, Darmian and loads wanted him gone. Some of the complaints about him centered around him lacking a footballing brain, being defensively naive, lazy, and having a poor delivery/final ball.

Reading the comments about him on here, not neccesarily from you, I really dont think many have seen him outside of this good past season that he's had and at 28/29 it's an outlier until proven otherwise.

It may be another case of MGW with Livramento....

It's not that we don't like him and we don't want him, but like MGW when Cherki was available for 30M as opposed to MGW at 80M, the value was just too good to pass up, and I think it's the same here. I think we like Livramento, but Dumfries as a short term solution at 20M as opposed to Livramento at 80 is just too good of a deal to pass up.

You have to figure out the HG stuff, and maybe you can find someone who qualifies down the line.

Would we need to open talks if he has a release clause?
We would need to open talks with him otherwise we would be wasting our time. We aren’t going to activate his release clause without finding out whether he wants to come first

Presumably the talks with inter are just a gesture of politeness, but I’m not sure
