So it appears the vast majority of posters favour some form of shooting the rioters and such.

Lets look at what can be done.

Curfews - Perhaps a curfew for everyone during the hours of darkness.

Road blocks, checkpoints - Prevent the free movement of people so they cant gather in numbers

Use informants - As advocated by the police today, inform on people you know who were seen on the media coverage.

Snatch squads - Target ringleaders and cut off the snakes head.

Call in the army - Tanks in Piccadilly would be a deterrent.

Censor media coverage - Nothing then for potential rioters to copy

Invoke Martial Law - The country can then be run by the COBRA committee

Anyother ideas?
None of the above is necessary. The existing laws of riot, violent disorder, theft, criminal conspiracy, arson endangering life, GBH, ABH, assault PC etc are more than sufficient.
The problem is that those laws are not being enforced. The policing is at fault, not the law.
GMP's stand-off tactics are baffling and creating more problems for themselves. Seems like very poor decision-making at the top strategic level.

Not funny. Not today.

Mate I agree,but I did chuckle...

Do these events eerily remind anybody of the excellent Japanese film Battle Royale?

For those who haven't seen it, essentially the plot is thus:

In the future the kids of Japan lose respect for the adult population and humanity in general through lack of discipline, and so start a campaign of civil unrest tantamount to declaring war on society. As a punishment, the government order that a school of youths should be sent to a remote island. Upon reaching the island, each pupil is given a weapon, some good (like sub-machine guns) and some not so good (like scissors). Explosive devices are fit around their necks and they are given just a few days before they explode. In that time, they must kill everybody else to become the last person standing. If there is no clear winner by the end of the time period, everybody is killed.

I'm not for a second suggesting we send those arrested to an island to fight it out, but I just find it interesting how the story line predicted this civil unrest amongst the youth.

There's mass hysteria on my Facebook feed that Edgeley and Stockport have been attacked.

I drove past Edgeley's high street around 25 minutes ago and nobody was there - nobody at all.

Stockport is completely deserted too.
Not that you would notice if Stockport was being rioted

There was a post way back in this thread saying the riots were the result of 30 years of liberalism and political correctness but that couldn't be further from the truth, if anything its the result of 30 years of neo-liberalism, the conscious efforts of a section of British society to re-write the social contract for the benefit of the wealthy few and the promotion of the mindset that "there is no such thing as society."

I don't condone the rioters, who are for the most part only succeeding in damaging their own communities, but blaming this on opportunism and the criminality of "lazy scrotes" is completely missing the bigger picture and the questions this raises about the state of western consumer society in general (remember this happened in France too 5 or 6 years ago).

Empty violence in response to a vacuous system and meaningless future.

Bollocks. the poor in this country have never been so wealthy! Stop making excuses or trying to find reasons, there are none
fuck off, I live in Peckham and ONLY have PS2- you know nuffin bout poverty innit

I blame you for all this kicking off. You were in London when it started,

We were all fucked off after the match, but some of us went home without creating widespread civil unrest and rioting. Bit extreme if you ask me.
