RIP Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna)

Such a very funny man. I found him funnier as Dame Edna but each to their own. God bless him.

Brilliant comic and writer. Saw him on stage some years ago, fantastic
He bantered with a miserable woman at the front and went for it:
”Where do you live, dear.”
”Huddersfield.”
”In what sort of flat?”
”I own a semi.”
”A semi in Huddersfield! We are in the presence of royalty.”

Could make you laugh and make you think at the same time like all great comedians.

He was much more than that of course and gave me some of my favourite hilarious times seeing him live and on the box.

Like many wits with timing second to very few he knew how to bring anyone down to size and in his case in a loving way and loved to make fun of himself his greatest critic he upset the establishment ( because they virtue signal and are puppets to those who take themselves far too seriously and have not wit and humour in their bones ) and was eventually cancelled from the very festival he helped set up.

RIP Barry a flawed individual like all of us who gave the world great humour and made a real difference in the course of discourse , the arts , free speech and the list goes on.

They don't make them like Barry Humphries anymore and the world is poorer for it.

I well remember a TV cookery programme which starred a mouthy Fanny Craddock and her downtrodden husband Johnny. Quite often if he was a bit slow in passing the fish slice or cream jug she would give him a sharp crack across the knuckles with a dessert spoon. One time she was baking a variety of cakes: eclairs, Victoria sponge, jam tarts, vienna slices etc. At the end of the show Barry Humphries appeared, in Dame Edna gear, as a guest. Turning to the camera she cried "Hello possums. You too can now have doughnuts like Fanny's."
