Really sad news but he had a life well lived.
Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago. He told me about Malcolm Allison getting him to alter his birth certificate, as Big Mal was nervous about Joe Mercer agreeing to sign a player who was 32 at the time. He suffered (I think) an ACL injury pre-season in 1968/69 which might have finished other players but he was back in the new year and continued as a regular until 1973, when he was 38.
Also told a great story about attending an AGM when he was manager, but he didn't have any shares so couldn't officially attend. Sidney Rose transferred some of his shares so he could attend as a 'shareholder'. He left the AGM and Sidney came out to chase after him and get his shares back.
He was an exceptional right-back that few, if any, opponents got the better of, even in his later seasons. Went on to become a great manager, who was undermined by Swales when Allison came back. Prior to Pep, that team he managed was the best I've watched. He was a modest man but always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye, although he was apparently a stern disciplinarian with the players.
Quite simply he was one of my heroes and I'm so pleased he graced us with his skills, and that I got the chance to meet him. RIP Skip.
