Rishi Sunak

Even if half of it gets invested, it will still have a more beneficial impact than HS2.

None of it will get invested in the North. Decades of promises and zero delivery will tell you that. Besides, the Govt has a year tops before an election, so nothing of substance announced today will be implemented.

The Tories are larping at this point. Their political reason for being is grievance politics not governance. They are little more than a fringe YouTube channel.

Are you really that gullible?
There isn’t a £36bn pot that was set aside for HS2 that will be easily accountable as transferred to other projects. It’s a totally bullshit promise where we would see every penny spent on infrastructure in the north touted as a benefit from the cancellation of HS2 when it’s impossible to say if it would or wouldn’t have happened anyway.
The dimmest person on Bluemoon calling others gullible.

Obviously the scrapping of HS2 will get the headlines but as someone who works in secondary education the merging of A-Levels with the T-Level qualification that was only launched 3 years ago is unbelievable. How many hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent creating, launching promoting and actually delivering them over the past couple of years? And now all the students who took a risk going for these new T-Levels have been left with a qualification that nobody will recognise in a few years time. Scandalous.
This because private schools aren't getting the results they want and they want an 'easier' baccalaureate.

It puts me in mind of the ‘there’s no money left’ note left on the chancellor’s desk, as if there was a big box of cash in the cupboard under the stairs and when it was gone it was gone.
They still peddle this one.

Most of us will do well to see a few more buses and the disgusting Sunak knows that.

Having looked at the Government's accompanying document (which looks like a teenager's first attempt at a PowerPoint presentation), half the projects listed have already been announced or are in progress, and a load more are diverting rail infrastructure spending onto road schemes.
I have a strong feeling that the "£36billion" will be the next "£350 million a week on the NHS" lie.

Or it’ll be ringfenced for Michelle Mone and Dido Harding to launder.

I agree with the sentiment, but this government have quite a record on 'jam tomorrow' train announcements for the North.

There's a great thread from Jennifer Williams at the FT (who used to cover politics for the MEN so has been following this stuff for years) - she pretty much suggests that announcements from the Tories are worth the square root of fuck all. Click on the Twitter link to see the longer version.

The speech will no doubt get picked apart in the next few days, but plenty of these plans have already been announced, others are scaled down versions of past announcements, and some have already been announced and cancelled in the past.

Oh yes.
There was one of my molecules somewhere thinking....this guy surely doesn't have the audacity to cancel this huge investment in Manchester whilst in the city itself?

Fcuk all of that pot will make negligible difference on this city's transportation (and that's if much of that came this way anyway). system.

....and I was once thinking we'd be talking about our own underground by now.

Well and truly shafted with all that nonsense today.
I don't expect them to survive the GE tbh, but still, the damage is done.
