Rishi Sunak

It’s funny how the bar has been set so low that “not certifiably insane and likely to completely nose dive our economy into the third world” is all we now ask of our prime minister.

Having said that I thought Sunak did his best during covid, which can’t be said for a lot of them - Johnson, Hancock and the link.
I can accommodate a mad person, it's the latter I'm more concerned about!

Agreed, Sunak is best for now but we still want a GE because I'm sure some MPs in that party will try to fuck it all up with the infighting
There's always someone who feels that fuckin' their party over is why they've been elected. It helps their cause if they've been fucked over by the party, but there's enough loose cannon in Westminster that would make the Royal Horse Artillery take cover.

I do prefer sunak to the other thundercunts who want to lead the Tory party.

But thats only in the same way i would prefer to have one testicle removed not two.

They are all cunts and I want them all out of parliament, whether they resign or commit suicide, I am not really fussed at this point

Also worth mentioning:

For a party that is so often described as being run by racist old white men, having 3 female PM’s and an Asian heritage PM before Labour has ever managed a non middle aged white male leader is some going.

The lack of diversity in the leading positions in the Labour Party is pretty shameful but I don't think the Tories track record with race does much to show how far we come. The women and POCs who have progressed in the the Tory Party just serve to remind us that wealth and privilege above all is the main driver in who gets to succeed with the Tories.

He was a good chancellor and made the most sweeping moves to ensure people didn’t go without during covid of any western leader with the furlough programme. He wasn’t exactly dealt an easy hand.

I’m just enormously glad the Tories seem to be going for someone that isn’t mental to take the reins. (Low bar as someone said)
I disagree, and despite Boris saying that, I don't believe any independent fact checker have suggested it was the most generous or sweeping.

It's also been made clear (and even he has briefed this in order to up his 'tough choices' persona), that he would have gone for something less generous, that covered less people, and that ended sooner.

All the talk of "grown-ups" is worrying, because there's a strong argument that the last supposed grown-up, George Osborne (who took over when the country had already come out of recession), used the 2008 crash as an excuse to decimate public services. The talk now is all about pain, but clearly it's not pain for Conservative ministers and their friends.

It’s not shameful if it’s for a genuine reason, such as the best people they have being in the best jobs.

Rishi is going to be PM now because he’s the best option (the morons should have had him in before Truss but that’s another debate).

That’s the way it should be, everyone should have an equal opportunity to the top jobs irrelevant of background or skin colour.

I don’t really think Labour are guilty of not doing that.

Anyway, the Tories won’t call a GE as people have said or they’re finished, I’m pleased we have Sunak, I think he’s an impressive individual and whilst I want the Tories gone after what they’ve done, a safe pair of hands for two years won’t do the country any harm.

I remember at the time Labour were calling for x and Sunak delivered well above what they originally called for.

The furlough scheme was a huge shock, in how many it supported.

He deserves a lot of credit.

Guess we need a Sunak thread now it's odds on he's going to be the next PM.

Can he actually be a success?

Can he shake off his association with the Johnson government that delivered us the worst of all worlds when we exited the EU?

Can he shake off his personal scandals related to non-dom and his wife's tax affairs?

Can he shake off his history of being a toffee nosed twat totally out of touch with working people? (levelling up for Tory rural seats and recordings about the working class from when he was young)

Will the sizeable contingent of overt and latent racists within the ranks of Tory voters swallow their distaste of a brown person being PM and support him? (that comment is mostly aimed at the UKIP and BXP supporters that fell in behind the Tories, although it would appear there is not an insignificant number of them amongst Tory Party members as well)

In my opinion there's not a snowball in hell's chance he can overcome all that and be a force at the next election. The best we can hope for is that he steadies the ship ahead of losing the election whenever it happens.
And the most important, "can he," of all:

Can he last longer than a head of lettuce?

A man who should have resigned or been sacked for lying in parliament to a direct question is about to become PM.

Plus ca change…

Might not go down well on here but as a British Asian man I feel ashamed and betrayed that a man like rishi can claim to represent me, other immigrants and working class people through his vicious and calculated right wing politics that keeps us all fighting for scraps and fighting against each other. The only way his race is at all relevant is so the Tories can use him as a token to say look at us were not racist which is a laughable concept in reality as their politics are inherently racist.
