Riyad Mahrez reportedly in line for new contract

Good for him and for the club.
His equalising free kick against West Ham was particularly vital for the PL title. His goal at the Bernabeu should have sealed it. Pep rates him. Especially crucial for the Champions League run.

I think there is a stigma attached to any player aged 30 or over that they are finished. Mahrez (like Salah) looks like someone who could easily play another 3 years at the level required at City. Like many who join he had a difficult first year but he’s now one of our most important players. It’s one thing having the majority of the squad in their thirties, but we don’t. This is a good move and I’d be delighted if it happens.

I remember Beckenbauer going into the 1990 world cup talking about the average age of 27 and that is exactly the right age. No one else would bother with such things at the time, but West Germany had more attention to detail than anyone else at that time.

I don't think we are too far off that with an expected starting XI and if anything the peak will be older now by a year.

Because we 'd rather not sell him.
I don’t think that’s the case. We would sell him over Jesus or Raz if it was down to us (IMO). He may not want to go and there are no takers as far as I can see, so we’re stuck with him. I just don’t see the rationale for a new contract given his limitations.
