I read somewhere that ensuring transfers are protracted is the way Txiki tests the character of the player being sought (commitment to City's project; view regarding salary etc). By allowing the player opportunities to choose alternatives, once our offer is on the table, if they are committed to our philosophy they'll fight to join us and therefore, more likely fit in with the dynamic of our current squad. Don't know if it's true but it seems a plausible away to sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. It could account for why some of our dealings go on and on.
