I take your point but in a scenario where Bernardo was seen as Silva's replacement (again, I know that's up for debate) then I wouldn't take the extension as too much as a shock. You'd expect to see Bernardo play more games next season (Silva turns 33 next season) and then, as sad as it is to say, Silva winding down to playing the number of games Bernardo has this season by 2020. Fits in with what you'd expect.

Not to mention: why, when everyone is screaming about lack of depth, would we make our squad even more shallow by sending a young winger/attacking midfielder (where we are light), that’s currently in and around the first team, out on loan?
