Yeah he offered to come back hoping to be allowed to spend the rest of his days with his family as he was not a well man. A lot of people thought he was coming back just to get free NHS treatment
Anyway he was sent to prison but eventually did get out as his health deteriorated, but he ended up living longer than medics had exoected

The sentences that were dished out for that crime were excessive, when you compare it to other sentences that were bring dished out at the time. That said, the train driver sustained some life altering injuries, so they all should have been looking at double figures, but 30 years for a robbery with no guns or knives is pretty nuts.
