Rochdale... was it a bomb or a plague?

I grew up in rochdale and left in 2002. It was shit when i lived there but when i went back to visit last year i couldn't believe how much further it has gone downhill .

Apart from Norden and littleborough the place is a fucking dump and i dread to think how bad it will be in another 10 years

I'm recording in Rochdale today

Following such luminaries as the Stone Roses and Autechre

Still a shit hole like.

Based for work in Rochdale covering Tameside, Oldham and Rochdale. Originally from Ashton until moving to Oldham 26 years ago.

Makes me smile when people say the Metro is going to save all the area. Do they not realise that it just makes it easier to get out and shop, drink etc in the City?

Thank god I live in stockport(tin hat again).

Fucking hell - I wouldn't go that far.
Rochdale has gone downhill over the last 20 years or so,but then it is symptomatic of any former industrial town in the Greater Manchester conurbation.
Even Manchester city centre isn't the thriving hub it once was.
Stockport is a depressing place on a good day,and I'm surprised that there isn't a lengthy waiting list to jump off the railway viaduct.
The only redeeming feature is the A6,as it runs out of the hellhole.
And I don't blame it.

The Metro is such a bad idea in Rochdale. Why would you spend an hour on a tram when you can get into town in 20 minutes on a train? Money wasted for me.

Has immigration in those areas made them worse than they would have been or would things be as bad or worse without ?

I lived in Rochdale from birth, moved out in 2000/01 and came back last year. What a fucking difference.

I lived in Norden which used to be a nice little village just before you go over the tops toward Blackburn, its a chav infested shithole now.

The chav disease is spreading like wildfire, it's like 28 Weeks Later.

I was born in Rochdale and lived there till 1988 when I moved away. To be honest back then it wasn't too bad - seemed to be just a typical Northern town. Nice town centre - wheatsheaf, Yorkshire St and Drake St. No real problems, issues, crime etc. I now go back every month or two to visit my mum and dad, it's just a complete sh!thole now besides Bamford/Norden and a few of the other areas way out - I think they've given up on it.

This is a tricky one. Immigration has definitely not helped though. When towns deteriorate so rapidly, it's partly due to lack of civic pride, Old Rochdale people will detest what has happened to their town, 'new' Rochdale people (imigrants, Asian and east European), will not be aware of its history and living in a shithole will seem normal to them. Homegrown whitetrash are as culpable as anyone else. Don't know what the answer is. Maybe build a "Shard" or have a massive big-wheel next to those flats on Spotland Road.
