That's what Democracy is for
Indeed it is , and it puts to rest any preconception that "many Swiss have been alarmed"
Many Swiss have been alarmed, a quarter of them, but that's not as many as the other three quarters who havn't been alarmed, that's what I said, democracy in action, they have had their say end of matter
I totally agree with you a- the people have had their say .
I just wondered where such emotive terms as " many Swiss have been alarmed " came from, when it was patently not true.

2 million, that's quite a lot, but not as many as the other 6 million

Yes we know what the numbers were , but I'm still left wondering why you use the term " alarmed" .
There does not appear to any substantiation for this claim , indeed you called them "placid and liberal minded " so why on earth many of them should suddenly have become "alarmed" is a bit of a mystery.
75% against the motion suggests to me that the Swiss took considered and sober view of the situation rather than following the current hysterical anti-immigration agenda which we see in this country led by right wingers who use such emotive terms as "swamped" and " alarmed".
I have no problem with expressed anti-immigration views as long as they are intelligent and well constructed, and not simply inflammatory or racist, or inaccurate.

This benefits tourism stuff is a red herring.

As a pure knee jerk, it's likely to come unstuck if judged counter to EU philosophy. If we're looking to curb benefits abuse we should be doing that anyway but on a universal, properly thought-through basis.

It's a Cameron fig-leaf. He's on the run, he knows it will make little impact on immigration figures and he knows his hands are tied. But hey - let's talk big.

He 'gets it'.
No 'ifs or buts' this time.
Vote Tory vote green and hug a hoodie in the Big Society, whilst losing a vote to take the country to war and topping Labour's net migration figures.
Still the economy's in good shape - a recovery having been taken into a massive trough and back to where we were five years ago except we're all worse off and please don't mention the deficit, national debt and balance of payments.
