Agreed he can't do it now, but he could after the election assuming he wins an overall majority.Ronnie the Rep said:Len Rum said:Err...if it's a red line, then it's not a negotiation is it?Ronnie the Rep said:It is a bit pedantic :-)
but if he puts it in the manifesto as a red line then he can't accept less can he? Either way, we have to do something and if the public think this is the right thing then they will vote for him.
So why not do it now?
Instead we have to wait at least 2-3 years now before it get's sorted (if at all).
BBC have just done some quick research which suggests these measures may make little if any difference. A lot migrants actually weren't aware of these in work benefits and for many they come over to get a job and further a career because the choice in their own country is no job/career. Even if Cam get's his way (which is by no means certain) then the difference it makes to the migrant worker is that at worst they earn something like 3x their local salary rather than the current five.
Seriously after his 'no ifs,no buts' speech on immigration in 2010 does anyone believe him? This is just a panic reaction to UKIP which is not guaranteed to work. Ask yourself why hasn't he done this sooner? He could have and we could have even had the EU referendum by now had he been serious. It's all smoke and mirrors and delay to get him through the next election.
He can't do it now because the libdems won't support it. Even labour are proposing a watered down version of this. I suppose it will have to wait until after the election. It is obvious that Cameron wants to talk tough now because of UKIP but if he gets elected and the public don't like what he ends up getting back from the EU then we will vote to do one, at least we will finally have a say
So why doesn't he promise to do it following the election?
Answer - he can't because (according to him) it requires EU treaty change. so he's going to try to negotiate his terms as amendment to the treaty BUT he's stated that his terms represent a red line i.e. are not negotiable.
Hence his position is untenable as to why he won't implement these proposals after the election.
