Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1986 - (page 212)

I see Steve Cropper, guitarist with Booker T & The MGs has died. He featured prominently in our write-ups of the early 60s and co-wrote and played on “Sittin’ On The Dock of The Bay”, was in the Blues Brothers and was a general all-round legend of early rock & soul.

I wrote on the who's died thread that though he's not a household name he is absolutely one of the greats of popular music. Vintage Guitar Mag have thrown up a playlist of some of his songs/playing that will be about as close to doing justice as will be practical.

Booker T who's 81 years young will be in the UK next April.

I still have that original CD, nice!

However in 1986, I played that in cassette form all summer long as I wouldn't buy my very first CD until 1987, and I bought that before I could afford a player! I will be selecting a song off of that release next year too.

I later found it but didn’t buy at a very reasonable price on E-Bay.

He he.. I figured you'd have something to say about that, and for the record, I did note that I think our tastes might have been diverging a bit around that time a few years prior. ;-)

Yes, our tastes would be diverging at that point although I’d say mine are reasonably diverse now but what I love most has not changed much.

For the record, Roth is anything but a buffoon: behind the clowning around he is one of the smartest guys in rock (albeit not smart enough now to retire), which is one of the reasons I an such a big fan.

That was where my main comment was directed towards, the material and all that accompanied it that was Dave focused. I just wasn't interested.

Was it pure Dave? Absolutely. That just wasn't where my musical tastes were going at the time.

Candy Apple Grey was this bands 5th album and first to a major.
I believe some felt that was a bit of a sell out but madd little difference as it didn't sell much more anyway even with some MTV rotation.
Think you can hear on this single where Bob Mould went with Sugar and Cooper Blue.

Husker Du - Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely

My last choice is...

Furniture - Brilliant Mind
The worst gig I ever went to. The international 1 on a wet Monday evening. This song had come out and was clearly the only song anyone in the audience knew.
The 50 or so crowd (self included) stood there motionless as the band (commendably) carried on with a smattering of applause for each song that decreased as the set went on. They went off for the encore. Came back on, played one more tune to again, another static audience before the singer said “I guess this is what you’ve all come for…?” and finally the crowd come to life! Song ends and we all file out into the Monday night rain……

Third choice for ‘86: Live to Tell by Madonna.

Slicker than a bottle of Johnson’s baby oil thanks to Patrick Leonard - a haunting atmospheric song from a rather bleak but compelling movie.
Great movie and song, thanks for nominating.

Penn x 2, Walken, Sutherland, Mary Stuart Masterson, an all-star cast. Been a while since I've seen it, but it was a favourite during that time. Haunting song I had on my shortlist too. One of the best songs I've ever heard from Madonna.

I could only find the version off of the "Paris Music", whatever that is. If someone has a track hack, I'll take it, but that's all I'm finding here.

Maybe someone else in the UK has strong desires to do 1988? There's still time! (joking/not joking)

Well that's a bit arse...if someone can't work it out I'll switch it to Billy Idol's I Don't Need A Gun.

I missed one song for the playlist because I googled the album and it came out in 1987 but the lead single came out in September 86.
Top tune
Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth

Fourth pick, Georgia Satellites: Keep Your Hands to Yourself.
Two great songs there. I was only playing "World Shut Your Mouth" last week.

A couple more tracks for the playlist

Boy in the bubble - Paul Simon (Fom Graceland)
Experiment IV - Kate Bush (released as a single to promote her compilation album The Whole Story)
A different corner - George Michael. George became the first solo act in the history of the UK chart to reach number one with his first two releases, (this was a solo release to follow up 'Careless Whisper').

2nd pick is from probably my second favourite album of 1986 (and also featuring Mr Marr, albeit not on this track). Covered at various points by The Redskins, a new age gong bath type whose name escapes me and arguably most bizarrely of all Colin Bluntstone.

Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs' Tears

Thrash metal has never really been my thing either, although I did listen to Reign in Blood when it came out. It was produced by the influential Rick Rubin, who also produced Walk This Way by Run-DMC/Aerosmith and (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) by the Beastie Boys, two other great songs from '86.
Given that it was at its highest chart position in March 1987, this track was going to form the basis of part of my review of 1987 coming next week. But you have quite rightly claimed it for 1986. Great song choice.

By 1986 Ginger Baker had mostly run out of people who were prepared to work with him, with the exception of Bill Laswell. Laswell got him involved in PiL's Album and also persuaded him to record what I'd argue is a bit of a lost classic. Horses and Trees is a more like an EP than an LP but is interesting take on a variety of world music and for all that Baker was clearly not a very nice bloke, you could argue his approach in this space was more respectful than that little bloke with his Graceland escapades!

Ginger Baker - Satou
