once he learns how to defend, run and actually do something useful in the defensive transition we might get somewhere near Liverpoo again.

Otherwise we'll play a distant 2nd for a few years yet.

Best let Pep know then. Always though he knew more about the pivot position than any other position on the pitch after using players like Busquets, Alonso, Lahm, Fernandinho and himself there. Must be mistaken.

Yhp, just like missing out on Jorginho the year before meant we faltered against Liverpool.

Great he may be, infallible he certainly ain't.

And Fernandinho is the only one with a skillset to succeed in the role in the Premier League - Benitez had Alonso when he signed Mascherano to do the job properly, and was willing to sacrifice Xabi for Gareth Barry.

Alonso was babysat by Marcos Senna for Spain, and Liverpool were 3-0 in the Champions League final with Alonso anchoring - it’s only when Hamann came on that they neutralised Kaka. He was a good player, but had more style than substance.

It's Fabinho we missed out on. He is the closest to Fern.

Yes, he’d have been adequate, but Pep specifically wanted Jorginho - had we got him, we’d have lost the league last year because we’d have been getting smashed on the counter like this season. He hates the fact Fernandinho’s destructive play was a key to his success here; his insistence on replacing him with turtles - and refusal to reinstate him into the midfield once it became clear Rodri was a defensive liability - confirms it.

The ideal long term replacement for Fernandinho is Thomas Partey, but he’s too much of an athlete for Pep, so we’re likely stuck with the Tapas Eric Dier until the next manager upgrades.

Lets see.

Rodri hasn't had the benefit of time under Pep, time in the PL, or being in a really strong and stable team like between 2017-19.

Fernandinho in the 16-17 season wasn't anything to shout about. He wasn't bad but he wasn't amazing either. It wasn't all on him as our back 5 had a lot of struggles that year. Once the backline got sorted and the team stabilised he really started to grow and improve and be the player he's been.

Give Rodri a chance.

Is he the Atletico Madrid guy? He looked fantastic against Liverpool.

Not sure why some are keen to slag him off. Sane absolutely sucked in his first season, Yaya, silva were underwhelming for 6 months or so. Fernandinho too looked sluggish at first.

Someone gushing here about Fabinho, he had underwhelming first season too.

People got another thing coming if they expect us to get a destroyer under Pep. The first job of the #6 is to play out from the back under a high press. If the player doesn't have the skills they will give away the ball and put us under direct pressure. Dinho did okay, but there were quite a few times he either gave it away or wasn't able to keep the ball moving. If we can't successfully bring the ball to the final 3rd we can't dominate possession and attack in the final 3rd. People say this or that player has decent ball skills. No it has to be exceptional ball skills. Rodri has it.

People want them to destroy and break up counters which would be nice, but in the final 3rd the #6 acts more like a #8. They have to be able to recycle the ball and change the point of attack and keep the ball moving. They are there partly to break up counters, but the destroyer or ones who break up the counters are the inverted fullbacks. The reason Walker is in the team. His speed is used to break up counters. Also why Delph was sat next to Dinho 2 seasons ago. It's the reason why Pep tried Dinho at LB in his first year.

We will always get caught on counters. It will happen because of the way we play. Teams sit deep, we try to penetrate and the ball gets lost. Our CB's play a high line to limit the amount of midfield space there is. So teams go over the top. This season they played through us because of a lot of factors. Mendy playing wide instead of Delph or Zinch sitting next to the #6. Mendy is also not good on the ball and gives it away a lot more. Not having Laporte, Kompany or decent CB cover.

Rodri is class and just needs the right defenders around him.
