Rodri - The 2024 Ballon d'Or Winner! (Pg 131)

We can’t complain too much if he doesn’t win it.

He’s been our best player in every one of the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons yet we didn’t even vote him as our own POTS in any of those seasons ourselves.

He’s been the most influential player on games in the world since he started the season bossing games in 2021-22 with those two 5-0 home wins in a row against Norwich and Arsenal. He didn’t look back from then on right up to bossing France and England (up to half time) in the Euros in the Summer, winning 3 PL titles, 1 CL, 1 FA Cup, 1 SC, 1 CWC, 1 CS, 1 Nations League and 1 Euros being the best player for every team throughout.

Vinicius is a wonderful player and the way he has spoken about the racism is to be commended. That press interview where he broke down crying was heartbreaking.

But when you look at his statistics as an attacking player they're not particularly impressive. Yes he scored in the CL final, but Rodri has done that albeit in a different season and also added international success to his accolades along with a ridiculous unbeaten record which showed his importance to us.

It should be Rodri's but the Real PR machine and general sway towards more attacking players will mean it goes to Vinicius.
You found the answer in there and then passed it by.

We live in a world where football isn’t the only thing that matters to “Who is the best player of the year?” but it’s a French award, so who knows…?!

Strange one if Rodri doesn’t win it, however.

Messi wins as international tournaments are more important - therefore Rodri should.

But if Vinicius wins it, it’s because the Champions League is more important.

Either way, the goalposts seemingly shifted when Haaland and Rodri were in the running.

when did everyone start giving a shit about this award, its utter bollocks?

i am so glad Pep said he did not care who won it. Its voted by sports writers, whose shortlists never reflect player/coach lists.

I find the endless hype about it really irritating. It means nothing. It’s a team sport. Why are City flying entire planes full of people over for it?!

Championships mean something. Trophies.

100% agree

The Balloon Door has proven itself to be a pointless award and process over the past few seasons in particular.

If they want to claw back some credibility then recognizing Rodri would be a start, but I believe Vini Jr has already got this wrapped up.

I genuinely don't think even many rival fans would begrudge Rodri that recognition, but as we know there is an unwavering bias amongst some sports journalists that they just can't rise above. Winning the champions league and an international tournament won't be enough ever in some people's eyes, if you play for City. Luckily, I and most City fans couldn't give a toss what most sports writers think as they have also proven themselves to be pointless, clickbait whores, over the past few seasons.

It’s a big thing for the players. Always has been.

They see it as an honour to be invited, to be shortlisted is huge for them. Proper black tie event that they take their families to.
