The best part is that Madrid did all the PR to convince everyone that Vini had won. And another good thing is it shows there was no corroboration between Ballon d'Or and themselves - giving the award some much needed credibility.
One of the last things we didn't have in our trophy cabinet as our global appeal continues to rise.
I actually think this is what Real Madrid are actually raging about.
As others have pointed out, there is now no major team or individual accolade that a player cannot win whilst playing for us. The Ballon d’Or was the last thing Real Madrid could say only they could provide to a player who was considering joining them or City.
And that was incredibly important to them, because their financial power is waning, as ours is only strengthening, so that differential was helping to mitigate their inability to offer the same overall compensation packages, including selling players on the exorbitant image rights they could secure playing for Real Madrid (even though the club still takes a huge junk of that, even after they have been forced to lower their contracted share over recent years).
The differentiators are falling away, as La Liga weakens, and the massive injection of cash from the Super League looks to be less and less likely. Their recent hammering at home by a makeshift—and most importantly
young—Barca team has likely only intensified their existential crisis.
Their response is one of fighting the dying of the light.
Whilst we’ve now taken more of the spotlight.
What a time to be a blue (and a Real Zaragoza supporter)!
