Ok, here it goes. I wouldn't consider myself an anxious guy and especially not with the owners/board/staff that we have now, but I definitely have some anxiety kicking in. For me, I think Fernandinho is the absolute perfect fit for our league and in the modern game. I also think he might be the most important piece to the squad (yes, it's very balanced and also Gundogan showed he adapted as the season went on playing deeper).
I've always been a huge fan of absolute destroyers in defensive midfield. It's not fitting of the modern game of course but I love watching top defense mids just clean up and put in healthy tackles, cause chaos, and doing the dirty work.
In short, I really rate the dark arts in that position and fernandinho is the master of it whereas Gundogan would be the opposite. Clearly that isn't a main focal point for us but I do have some serious concerns about the void that Fern will be leaving in that regard. Ideally we would have signed rodri with fernandino having two years instead of one to compete with him...
Maybe Rodri will have more than enough in that regard, but as far as a net gain/loss goes I'm sure he'll eventually be an upgrade if not from the get go. If there's any worry at all from me going into next season (and it's pretty close to 0) it would have to be that.
My one time Rodri rant over.
One of my most enjoyable moments from salty journalists on football twitter last season was seeing how often the rag **** Duncan Castles bitched at how effective we were at it. Really, really, really put a smile on my face :-). Every time.
