Ronaldo avoids World Cup suspension

The top four seeded countries will not be able to meet each other until the semi-finals of next year's World Cup for the first time in the tournament's history.
There should be no seedings, no pots, just a big hat like a normal cup draw.

Group games between two top teams still have the chance to be tense, offering some interest among the otherwise tedious early games between, say, Germany and Tristan da Cunha.

Have you read the other WC article today???

Fifa has announced that Spain (1st seed) and Argentina (2) will be 'paired' and placed into groups in opposite halves of the draw.

France (3) and England (4) will also be paired, which means England will not be able to come up against Spain or Argentina until the semi-finals, and France until the final.

This only applies if the four countries win their groups."

Just doesn't feel quite right to me - but I'm old school and thought a "draw" was just that RANDOM
England won it in 1966 being seeded and allowed to play in one base with bent decisions throughout. It is nothing new but ignored if favourable.

Can you even imagine the media if Haaland was suspended for the CL final but UEFA just decided for the good of the brand he was allowed to play.
The original Ronaldo was feeling ill before the 1998 final, and it was generally believed that Adidas(? possibly Puma) had pressured Brazil into playing him in the final, which didn't work out well.

That, however, didn't flout the rules like this does. Turtle lookalike Ronaldo must have told Trump that his hair looked nice, or something similar.

To think that Khus will be sitting out the first game at least, because of a mis-timed tackle. I haven't seen his punishment yet, but if it should be a 3-gamer, they probably won't even bother taking him.

Double standards really bug me.

Add possibly Nike to the above, but agree about all of it.

Azerbaijan should raise a complaint with FIFA - most famous player from the country, might make a difference.

Wasn’t alive to see it - doubt I'll be alive the next time England win it either ;)
Not the same experience of course, but the match itself is occasionally broadcast on some lesser channels. The quality of the football is surprising low.

Come forward just one year and watch Celtic winning the '67 European Cup (also occasionally shown) and it's like a different sport. They were brilliant.

Firstly, Khusanov was sent off in a friendly. Suspensions from red cards in friendlies are served in friendlies.

Secondly, he wasn't sent off for violent conduct, but for DOGSO, being the last man, which means he'll get a one match ban. Uzbekistan will play 2x games in March and probably in June before the world cup.

He's not missing any World Cup games.

Didn't know it was a friendly - that's great news.

I'd assumed that it was a single game ban, but hadn't seen it confirmed.

They still have to win their group to get the benefits of being 'seeded'
Don't worry, I'm sure they'll unveil some even newer ideas soon which will ensure this happens, maybe the seeded teams only getting refereed by officials from their own countries in the group stages or something equally as eye-opening.

I’m still waiting for Scholes to serve his suspension from the FA Cup semi-final.
Bit like when Ronaldo was at the Rags and smashed that fans phone and got charged by the PL yet it took months for some reason to charge him and only suspended him after he left the Rags for Saudi so the ban had no effect

Is this not the norm.
If they did not qualify as group winners he would have seved the suspension.
Since they won their group he will start with a clean sheet like every other player.
