Rotherham child abuse scandal: 1,400 children exploited, report finds

At least 1,400 children were subjected to "appalling" sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, a report has found.

Children as young as 11 were raped by multiple perpetrators, abducted, trafficked to other cities in England, beaten and intimidated, it said.

The report, commissioned by Rotherham Borough Council, revealed there had been three previous inquiries.

Council leader Roger Stone said he would step down with immediate effect.

Mr Stone, who has been the leader since 2003, said: "I believe it is only right that as leader I take responsibility for the historic failings described so clearly."
'Doused in petrol'

Professor Alexis Jay, who wrote the latest report, said there had been "blatant" collective failures by the council's leadership, senior managers had "underplayed" the scale of the problem and South Yorkshire Police had failed to prioritise the issue.

Following publication of the report the leader of Rotherham Council, Councillor Roger Stone, announced he would step down with immediate effect. He has been the leader since 2003.

He said: "I believe it is only right that as leader I take responsibility for the historic failings described so clearly".

'Racism' fear

By far the majority of perpetrators of abuse were described as "Asian" by victims.

Despite this, the report concluded: "Several staff described their nervousness about identifying the ethnic origins of perpetrators for fear of being thought as racist; others remembered clear direction from their managers not to do so."

What type of a society have we become to allow this and have people stand around and watch this happen?

Despite Stone's resignation, chief executive Martin Kimber said no council officers will face disciplinary action.

Rotherham was the council which wanted to stop people adopting children if they were UKIP supporters but they weren't bothered about the abuse of 1400 children despite several clear warnings that it was happening.

Police and Social Services knew about it!

Not much shocks me, in fact almost nothing at all, but the fact NOBODY did anything about this is actually shocking!

Doesn't surprise me one little bit, this country has been sliding into a human cesspit for the last 50 years.
Some people still believe everything is hunky dory so that's ok, more fool them

Nothing will change. It will get worse as social service professionals get cut overworked and undermined. Their will be the normal shit about lessons learned and people in power will try to make out it was in the distant murky past when in fact it was going on upto 2012. This sensitivity about racism will be played on by all the ukip types when in fact it will boil down to a local authority doing what they always have and will do...... Covering things up so it doesnt get out and the negative publicity doesn't get anywhere near threatening some very cozy jobs and some very nice wages. All of it will be the fault of the local authority I guarantee it.

this is disgusting, how could they just ignore it out of fear of being racist. The monsters that committed the crimes and the council who ignored it should be locked up.

Witness the usual feeble-minded council (and police) employees who'd rather keep schtum about those they are paid to protect than offend some filthy rapists.

If happens every fcukin time. And the standard script is spewed out: " we apologise for letting people down...lessons to be learned....stop it ever happening again...new procedures in place .... everything's tickety-boo since that report.... blah, blah, blah".

Until the spotlight is off them and the little darlings can return to accruing their pensions in peace.
