Roughest pub

Talking 80s now. Roughest gaff I ever went was Willie Millers bar in Aberdeen, had Formica tables so easy to mop the blood off when the oil boys came ashore. Roughest collection of pubs in an area, definitely Hackney and those closest to the cop shop were the worst. The craziest place for odd ball characters and bonefide nutters was the out-of-hours Golden Gate Club on Oxford Road approach. I dont think I ever went in there unpissed.
It seems a bit weird you mentioning the Golden Gate as we were talking about it in the pub yesterday. It was always the last resort when you couldn’t get in anywhere else.

A few pages back somebody mentioned Mick Tierney, (not my favourite person). It was one of his haunts when he wasn’t locked up. I was in there one time and started talking to Tierneys sister who was actually uglier than him.

I was a student back in later 80’s and had a work placement in Runcorn.
No real student accommodation, so had to stay in the now demolished Southgate estate.

Local paper was lying on dining table, as I got to know my new flat mates, I saw the headline ‘Murder at The Merry Monk’... opened front door, looked left, saw pub...
Asked flat mates ... ‘ yeah that was last week, killed on our doorstep’

The next weeks local paper headline ‘Terror at The Tricorn’... the other local pub...

Surprised I survived the place, as I regularly wandered around, alone, through the estate rather drunk.
The swinging sporran and straw hat were no better. The old town was even worse!!

Not sure if it was the Flemish but the incident you are refering to was when two lads ran in with automatics that they had never fired before, the recoil jolted their arms/guns up in the air so most of the bullets went into the ceiling, there was then a small pause as they stood there like 2 lemons, no one dead and them out of ammo. Suddenly half the pub pulled out their own guns, fair play to them they ran a fair way before being gunned down.

Edit, page 3 on here says it was the Brass Handles where that happened.
Well even for a kid from Wythenshawe that has to be up there whatever its fucking called.

The GG was plain bizarre and for us the go to place after copping an eyeful of the lunchtime strippers at the John Bull! Used to play snooker with Tierneys brother in the WHP Labour club, he was a decent bloke.
