even if he was fully fit from day one, it would still be too early to judge him
I thought he was good against Scunny, largely down to the difference in class, his quality of movement made up for his lack of mobility (an immobile Fowler also managed a hattrick against Scunny coincidentally). In premiership games he doesn't look even remotely fit enough and its not the time to get fitness into him, get him fit and confident in the reserves then give him prem games to get sharp.
