I don’t get this hammering we receive with buying defenders. The only stand out bad buys were Mangala and Mendy if he does not turn it around. The rest have did ok.

Komps injuries caught up with him.
Stones we all know has it but mentally has suffered.

Ota’s time was up due to age and we got bit money back.

Boateng was good but pussied home.

Nastasic decent but too slow and young at the time.

We won trophies along the way and the club grew in 12 years. A lot of buys were a must as we could not attract top tier early on.

Basically we get far too much shit for this. If the club was established like it is now 10 years ago maybe the judgment can be questioned. Overall we have bought very well.

It almost like the media have decided we are not allowed to buy anymore cb because we spent money in the past? Another stick to beat us with....fuck them all.
1) It's difficult to truly assess some of our defenders under Pep, as for the most part when they're exposed they're really exposed. Which means that they have to do almost impossible things. On top of that, everything they get wrong is magnified due to where it happens so it makes them look especially bad. Even if they get everything but 1 thing right, that 1 mistake is almost certainly going to be costly. And as we both know people all over have a habit of fixating on the negatives. And with our defensive issues last season, everything got magnified by tenfold.

2) With regards to why people care. Well, because that's the in vogue story. People didn't care that we 'tactically fouled' until Duncan Castles, Mourinho, and Neville started parroting about it and then nobody would shut up about it. People act like Pep is a failure for not winning CLs, even though Lord Master Taggart only won 2 (in extremely narrow and arguably fortunate circumstances) in almost 30 years with the bestest club ever. We have posters on here criticising certain players at every opportunity because that's what's in vogue. Rather than treat everything with nuance we create extemes through narratives and peddle the shit out of them. On this occasion it's how much Pep has spent on defenders. Because it's easy to talk about and the journos can generate clicks from them. Remember when everyone was booing Sterling up and down the country? I reckon half of those doing it couldn't even tell you why they were.

Ota's announcement is delayed 2 hours. Journalists are pissed off. I guess Benfica is waiting City to announce Dias first.

Stones was a shambles at Everton, and they were happy to get rid before his performances damaged his early hype and value any further. He had one purple patch of about 3 months here in a team that was absolutely flying, besides that he's been gash. Toilet. A more polished version of the dodgy centre half that was at Everton. This wasn't hard to predict. He was a homegrown signing that was a punt, predominantly based on nothing more than his ability to play it out the back and the hope that Pep could turn him into a competent centre half because he was still fairly young. Hasn't happened, to the surprise of few.

I don't even want to get started on the others but the Stones signing is a good example of how we've taken punts on these big signings at the back, when there were clear question marks over them already and we just seemed to hope Pep could work miracles with them.

Our recruitment deserves criticism. It's been piss poor.

Positionally dodgy with no pace, but he's good with the ball at his feet.

Great. Sounds like what we have plenty of already.

And he's coming from a league that is absolute toilet and is going to be expected to hit the ground running in a shambles of a defence. What could go wrong.

I'm going to be patient with this lad. But I fail to have confidence in this move.
