Rugby League Season 2023

Also 3 matches in a row that Wakefield have failed to score a single point, that's miserable!
They’re going to have a miserable season. Feel sorry for their fans as it’s going to be a long slog to relegation, I reckon.

Wakefield are a club I’ve never understood. Depending on which stat you use, Wakefield (110,000 with a wider 353,000) has a comparable population to Wigan (110,000 with a wider 329,000) and is a rugby league city. Yet Wakey’s attendances are about ⅓ of Wigan’s.

They should be a bigger club for me.

Wakey’s facilities haven’t been suitable for families for donkeys. On one Friday night visit the lights were out in the toilets and fans were getting soaked from leaks in the roof. I moved to the open stand because you were getting soaked either way. Now Wakey are investing in a new stand but it’s been long overdue.

Wakey haven’t had any real success for half a century and when they unearth an exciting player they tend to leave after a while.

IMG’s stated aim is to help Clubs like Wakey build their clubs and fan bases but they may get stuck outside the top flight for years with IMG’s rating / licence system. I think IMH would prefer to have Toulouse in the top flight and Wakey are offering zero entertainment for their fans.

It was great to see Harry Newman back last night, who destroyed Wakey in the 2nd half. That followed a tedious nil nil first half that was the worst 40 I’ve seen in years.

Dolphins have just tied up with 15 left against Canberra.

Cracking last 15, 2 yellows, tied kicks and a late winner

Wigan draw a lot of fans from outside the town though. I highly doubt Wakefield do. I wonder whether it’s like football aswell where a lot of fans from the surrounding towns gravitate towards Leeds, rather than their local club? Other possible thing I can think of is the ground seems to be in a predominantly Asian area, virtually none of whom seem to have any interest.

^ Sydney v Souths is the oldest and fiercest rivalry in the NRL, always a cracking game.

They were trying to knock each other’s heads off all game, a rugby record for most Sin Bins in a game.
