Rugby World Cup 2023

Been going to games since the 70s, not that I claim to be an expert. Presumably, contributing to a six nations thread means you're better qualified to comment - well done!
Far from it, but all of a sudden in a world cup year all these new posters pop up.
If you've been going to games since the 70's do you sit in the bar and get pissed or actually pay any interest as to what is going on.

Obviously, a bit of both!

My cousin is actually on the RFU Elite Panel and has officiated in the 6 Nations, so I do have some insight into the laws from chatting to him over the years.

2027 RWC:
24 teams, a round of 16 introduced and a week shorter.
Draw to be made in early 2026.

The draw is obviously closer to the tournament which is better.
Four more teams - will this help much, apart from ensuring that USA and its TV market qualify?
A week less length but an extra knockout round - I've not found whether this is 8 groups of 3, 6 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 6. The last seems unlikely unless the gaps between matches are condensed.

Six groups of four I’ve read.

How do you lose 8 teams from six groups for the round of 16?
It has been done in other big competitions in 1986, 1990, 1994, 2016, 2020(2021), 2024.

Makes not much difference as you still need 7 games to win it, same as the last one, and will end up with 4 more games 40 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 48 this year, 36 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 52 next. 4 more teams take part though with less breaks.
