should of deffered posting it on your strava fella ;-)

Just kidding.

Nothing of the sort mate, Im more in the "If I can do it anyone can do it" camp.
18 months ago i was 15 stone smoking 30 a day and struggling to get under 26 mins for a parkrun.
Plus there are lads in the strava club that are much quicker than me, I reckon they must be a lot younger lol

Last Feb/march i was 19 stone 13/20 stone was doing the odd bit of gym work but never getting anywhere. I had already chucked in the drinking (sticking with 0% stuff) and soon as lockdown happened thought sod it.

I'm now 17 stone 2, my target is 16 stone (i'm 6 foot 3 so will look silly going too slim)

You've done really well! are you still smoking or packed it in?

I'm struggling to get under 27 mins for my 5k, but i am putting that down to my shin splints stopping me.

My Garmin watch is telling me i should be doing a 5 k in 23.05, a 10 k in 50:28 and a half marathon in 2 hours 1 min. haha.

Would love to do a 10 k near 50 mins, doubt it will happen mind you :(

Firstly, huge congratulations on the two PB's. I've seen your post on Strava and what must feel even better is the fact you clearly have more to give as well! To set a 5K PB on a 10K run shows you can smash your 5k if you run that distance alone. And you got quicker and quicker across the 10k so clearly more in the tank!

Secondly, it's really encouraging to read your story. I'm so impatient with my improvements and unfortunately have a strava feed full of people much quicker than me. I started running again in December and have seen my 5k time go from 26:30 to an all time PB of 22.55 but most on my feed are sub 20mins so I still feel a mile off, rather than being happy with what's a huge improvement in 4 months.

Got my 10k PB down to 48:33 as well recently and a half marathon PB of 1hr53:30 last Sunday even though I was taking it "easy" until the last 5kms.

Just got to stick at it. Still on the vape far too much which I know is holding me back but is my only vice really. Don't drink much at all. Really want to quit but not found the mental strength yet.

Got a bout of man flu at the moment so Sunday might be a struggle, but I'll be out there either way trying to get a PB even if I blow up and walk the last 9.9kms!

Deferring times now why the fuck did I not think of that!!!
Off the smokes altogether now mate, sounds like your doing great, its weird in some ways how your times drop a year ago I doubted getting anywhere near these times, but just keeping at it day after day works a treat, I would say it helps that I enjoy it, I do a bit but nowhere near as much as the buzz after!!
Keep plugging away mate, youll get there, wherever there is?

Oh i'm loving running.

Id be out there today if i could be (work etc)

Just rest for the big run sunday :-)

I've moved away from trying to break personal records and get way more satisfaction from social running hence my obsession with trail running. I have also found that the social running has really decreased my speed when I do try and run on my own but never in a million years could I get a sub 40 minutes 10k well done @gaz76
I'm boozing Saturday night so will be aiming for mid table in Sundays 10k race :)

Always wanted to try trail running, but always feel like i will end up heavily injured.

All about the correct footwear mate and being sensible I find running with a group is always helpful- as I have no sense of direction :)

Also find the terrain gives me less injuries as predominantly running on grass.

Any footwear you recommend?

i live in stockport now, so be keen to see if there are local places other than parks to run through

I wear Brooks Cascadia which I really like- I live near Wigan so most of my trails are the disused mining land or up Rivington. I'd recommend joining a local running club if you aren't already a member of one? Great to find new routes and my own running club Atherton is 70/30 more into trail running so we do loads of social trail runs(always involve a good scran at the end when covid allows)

Nice them ! And they do clown feet for me haha.

I've recently had the Adidas Ultraboost and Adidas X9000L4 as my running trainers

Footwear is totally a personal choice. I have worn ultra boost since they came out and will not wear anything else, others may find them to heavy or wide. I suggest if you like your boost stick with them

i actually went to the X9000L4 as i thought they'd be a little more comfortable wearing them.

Going to wear the Ultraboost again sunday with the insoles i bought, see how i get on :)

Completely agree once you find something that works and feels comfortable I'd be loathed to change, I like Brooks but loads of my running mates are well into Hoka but personally they didn't feel great to me.

I prefer trail running. Good shoes make a big difference. I use these.

I think you are less likely to get a "running" injury. I think it's better than on the road because the surfaces are usually softer and the foot does not land in the same position with each stride. You could fall over as I have done occasionally. But nothing serious.
