Running thread

Lost all motivation with no immediate goals to hit. No park run or other events like Manchester Run to look forward too.

Done 2 x 5 mile runs this week, furloughed from work so not much else to do, everything now being cancelled means I’ve lost most of my motivation, no marathon no Ironman (fucked off after all that training) no long bike sessions, hard to get going again. Also been feeling fucked once starting, hopefully that’s just lack of training and nothing more sinister.

Anyone else still at it?

I know what you mean but ive swapped the gym for running again...just need it as a leveller in these horrid times. Even if I’m not feeling it I go out. What’s weird is running around 8 (which ‘used to be’ mid evening and generally busy on the streets...feels more like 2am. Found myself giving bigger waves and nods to runners now.

Yeah, I'm doing more and more now that I'm 'working' from home. Building up my mileage and hoping to be doing 60-mile weeks soon. The way I see it, this is a great opportunity to get in good shape.

I'm going ot most days doing 10-12k, interspersed with some 6-7k runs and the odd rest day. Really enjoying it, and it's quiet.

Mate, don’t say that - you’ll find running with no immediate goal harder work for sure, but the positive feeling you get afterwards will still be there in your body - you should deffo still get out there.
I’m managing to get in three “solo Park Runs” a week now, instead of just one :-)
And cos I’m doing the same course each time, there’s still a PB to try and equal/beat

How long have you been training and competing in races for
?

I was a racing cyclist (mainly time trials) and runner for 20 years but my last race was the 2014 London marathon. Now in my 50s I still run or cycle 5 times a week. It's a way of life and the motivation is enjoyment. I prefer trail running and do it for its own sake and enjoy nature. See how the scenery charges throughout year, different plants and wildlife.

So let the run come to you as the Kenyans say. Explore the countryside and running becomes a way of life.

Using this time to really try and get back into it. Had knee problems and done nothing for probably 7 /8 months and finally feeling better. Just got back from 7k in 37 minutes and felt good. Slowly pick up my times and distance over the next couple of months. Im a fair weather runner as well, hate running in winter when its cold. Now the weather is picking up a bit its perfect.

Started the couch to 5k last week

safe to say my legs are handling it better than my lungs

any tips on breathing correctly while running?

Been running probably last 5 years. At new year I set myself progressive targets to build up over the course of the year to do the Great North Run in September.

Maybe the light nights will get me going again. I was looking forward to the Manchester run before it got put back.

My mojo is well and truly back. Decided to start again in January and struggled my way to 5ks.. I’m now going out and doing 20k in just over an hour & 45. Running 4 days a week

Impressive that. I’ve never really run always struggled to motivate myself unless chasing a football or playing squash. I’ve done 4 in the last week of between 5/6k. My times are pretty poor and during the first I was thinking how do people motivate themselves to keep doing this. During my 3rd and 4th though I started to enjoy it a bit and get it.

Lost all my mojo.
Managing a daily run but pace has dropped massively.

Same here not having any events to train for. Gone from doing 10Ks and one long run a week to 5Ks which are a bit of a struggle even at a much slower time. Being at home all day the diet has gone to pot and my legs now feel heavy which I think is down to being more sedentary of late.

Yeh. Think anxiety has affected me aswell. Everything going on in the world plays on my mind running

You do eat more when you’re at home all day don’t you? Well, I do anyway, the temptation to graze is hard to resist and sometimes I don’t even realise I’m doing it.

Yeah. That is all I am doing. So easy to pop in the kitchen, make a brew, grab a biscuit etc, where previously, until I got home at 6, I would probably only have a sandwich and maybe one or two of the office biscuits. Today at dinner it was chips and veggie burgers on a muffin.

I did a 5k today at a pace no different to what I was expecting to run a half marathon in (three weeks ago) and felt exhausted at the end of it.

I’ve done Heaton Park parkrun 5k route, old route and new route, 14 days running. Seeing how many I can clock up on the trot.

That is excellent. Not that my advice is worth much but I did notice significant improvements when I started to add a few longer distances (even if much slower) and adding a hill run or speed run (fartleks) here and there.

Of course all depends on what your aiming for.
