Running thread

I went the other way.

In my early teen's I was an avid cyclist. Not competitive, but I cycled pretty much everywhere. I took up running in my 30, and have competed in loads of 10k, Half-marathon and full marathon events (road and trail). I got a hip flexor injury, and had a long lay off, and then never really got back into serious running. About 5 years later, I took up cycling again, mainly commuting and my CV fitness improved hugely.

It's not that I've done zero running in between (I run up 3 flights of stairs about 5 or 6 times a day at work and I'll occasionally do a short 1500m jog after a ride just to loosen off), just not structured, progressive running training. I think the cause of this injury is probably due to an underlying issue with my Achilles combined with a crap surface (cambered concrete pavement), and I probably should have stopped the moment it started to cramp.
Ahh. Ok. Sorry for trying to teach grandmother to suck eggs. Still worth reminding ourselves of basics sometimes though. I still make school boy errors.

I did a 20 mile cycle this morning with no problems even though I have not done much cycling this year / winter. Back in December though I did a 25 mile blast on fixie and hurt my knee going up too steep a hill. Recovered after a couple of weeks but a salutary reminder.

Ouch. My commute has a couple of steep hills (including a cobbled climb - The Full Michaelgate if you're on Strava). A fixie would KILL me.

I’m very tempted to enter the Suffolk Backyard challenge.

4 mile loop on the hour, every hour.

I would probably be knocked out first. But I really fancy doing it.

It does sound pretty cool. I’d like to try it, but it’d be a waste of a space. Be an odd one to train for too.

I forgot about the bluemoon 5k, But went out and did a bit further than 10k Sunday morning. My 5k time was 27:26 if that can be added to the results :)

Did 5k before work this morning as foot feeling ok, exactly same time/pace as my last one which I found little strange

Fixies are for track cycling. Why they've become cool for the road is beyond me.

Nothing new. A few club mates in the 1980s / 1990s rode fixed in winter. Ideal winter training & commuting bike for various reasons. Do you race on track or road / time trialling?

Crikey....some good 5k figures there. My record stands at 20:49 but I so want a sub 20 this year.

Posted this on the Covid thread:

Not entirely sure if it helped, but one week on since my jab I've finally been able to go out for a run after 3.5 months of post Covid/long covid health issues.
Felt a skip at lunch during my walk so asked myself whether a run was possible in the evening. Bumped into some runner friends whilst walking the dog after work and told them I was contemplating a 10 min run later.
Ended up as 5K....slow and gentle but listened to my body.

Was obviously a lot cooler today and I've been doing some breathing exercises of late (plus I started taking those vits I posted a while back) but there's every possibility the vaccine has helped the recovery.
32 mins for just over 5k but not bad all things considered.

Hopefully means I'm back on the road to fitness...christ, my mind and body have missed it.

Well done mate. Take your time and I’m sure it’ll come back to you.
I’d also get your bloods tested for iron, I wondered if maybe I had COVID or the after affects earlier in the year due to fatigue when running but turned out I was iron deficient, now alone I’d say it’s my diet etc however I’m the 5th person I know off who had suddenly become this, a knock on affect of COVID maybe? Who knows? Anyway my iron tablets have meant I’m almost back to the pace I was 18 months or so ago.
