Seen a few comments regarding footwear, and got me thinking....

I have a pair of Adidas Ultraboost, but the soles have started to split so need replacing. I have always found them comfortable, although have suffered with various leg niggles (ankles, knees) and lower back pain from time to time, but put this more down to perhaps not stretching enough as a routine.

So, I'm leaning towards buying another pair of Ultraboost, and my goals are only really going up to half marathon's at the moment, although that may change when the London ballot is announced later this month!

Do some of you use different footwear for long runs and races?

I use my current Ultraboost for everything currently, including walks (~15km a week).

I guess just wary of spending £100-£150 on pair of running shoes and finding them uncomfortable.
Hi mate, I use mine in rotation, Ive about ten pairs on the go(as many as I can get without the mrs noticing Im spending all my cash on trainers!!), Ive read amd also found that rotating helps stave off any injuries.
For races I use vaporfly mainly because they fast as fuck, and Im a sheep who sees everyone else has them on, for all other runs I just mix them between speed, terrain and distance.
Personally I would never run im adidas, for the same reason I wouldnt have a vodaphone or use sis gels .
Regarding buying them and they no good, Ive found that the big shops(sportsshoes, prodirect etc) and buying direct are great for refunds, I had a pair of alphafly that I didnt like from prodirect, did about 50 miles in them, sent them back... Full refund.
Same with nike, my vapourflys were a year old and developed a rip, sent them back.... Full refund. Nike give you 60 days no quibble money back, and two years on defects.
Hoka also do the same, think its try them for 60 days and if you dont like them they will refund you

Hi mate yep I have a pair of the endorphin speed, I use them for just everyday mileage and havent tried them in a race, they pretty light and have a decent amount of bounce in them so it makes them decent enough for everyday running.
I wouldnt really say they would be my pick for a mara though, although I have done 20 milers in them with no problems.
I originally bought them on the back of an ed budd review on youtube, where he said they trumped the pro version, then a couple of weeks later he changed his tune and said the pros were better, so I would be tempted to pay the extra £20 or so for the pros.
Saucony are pretty decent for everyday running shoes imho I also have a pair of the triumph 18 which feel heavy as fuck compared to my other stuff, but they really are great for long chilled out runs comfy as fuck and leave no problems with the legs after.

Thanks Gaz. I have a decent and fairly new pair of Asics I do the majority of my long runs in and they're comfortable and reasonably light but most of the reviews of the Saucony Speeds push me to those over the pros simply because they seem a better shoe for all occasions and I don't really need a race only pair as I rarely do events!

Will do a bit more research between the two and see. I spend a bit longer on my legs on raceday than you of course, so not sure the real speedster carbon plated shoes would do me much good!

I use the same ones until they wear out. I do have a nearly worn out pair that I use if I'm likely to meet mud.

I've had Brooks, New Balance and currently Asics. The New Balance split at the back of the heel, making them a loose fit, so I won't get those again. The other two have been fine. I get new shoes about twice a year, but I'm not at the same level as most on here. I'm not at any level at the moment as I've just got my first episode of COVID.

Get well soon !

I usually have a couple of road shoes on the go. An older Decathlon pair for bad weather and newer Asics ones for better weather.

Also have trail shoes used once a week on trail run.

I think the rotation of shoes and terrain helps.

Tried the puma deviate nitro elite out for a run this morning, crikey they good, the upper is weird and see through, but they fit great and feel like a pair of slippers, light as a feather yet feel so much more stable than the vaporfly.
I only went out with the intention of a slow leg shaker, but ended up pretty quick, they maybe not quite as good as the vaporfly, time will tell on that, but certainly better than the endorphin speed and could easily be used as a daily trainer comfort wise, worth a try for those of you looking at buying new gear.
That code I put on the other day is finished, but VIP30 works for 30% off, I dont work for puma btw just buzzing with these new ones

How's the marathon training going for everyone? I've had peroneal tendinitis since late December so have been playing catch-up the last few Sunday's but am not up to 17.1 miles with a month to go. Just messaged one of the lads on here about these energy gels, as I keep struggling physically once I get past the 15 mile mark.

It's my first one, so my plan is to reach 20/21 miles in training before the big day! Other than that I do one 5/6 miler a week at a decent pace, and a bit of cross-training in the gym. Probably not ideal prep, but the injury has saw to it that that's the best I could do.

Just replied to you on that mate. As I said in the message, I was recommended those by some of the bigger experts on this forum so whatever questions you have I'd put them to the floor.

Anything shoe related clearly goes to the fiend @gaz76 who seems to have a bit of a habit!

And there are plenty who do big weekly miles and have probably tried all the nutrition and tricks there are and can save you from some of the trial and error.

Guilty as charged, do a lot of miles buy a lot of shoes is my mantra, hence being always skint despite working 6/7 days a week

I swap around my shoes quite a bit to be honest dependent on the type of run and terrain.

Easy paced long road runs - Nike Pegasus 37, Quicker Road run Oncloud, races Nike Vaporfly.

Trails, easy paced run Hoka Speedgoat, Long runs Brooks Cascadia, races Solomon Speedcross, Muddy/Wet run Solomon Gore Tex Alphacross.

Its probably all in the head but I think changing shoes helps in using the different muscles in the foot, so assists you in avoiding injury and particularly in trails different lug sizes come into play to aid stability/stop slipping.

Always keep my eyes on Sportshoes for any bargains.

No different to do a few miles drink a few pints which happens to be mine! Same result with the bank balance.

As I missed almost a year of running last year, it's become clear I've forgotten to update my trainers.

I've had these Brooks Ghost for around 3 years now (and noticed a hole in the front at the weekend).

Had my gait tested a few years ago and these (neutral) were by far the most comfortable I tried.

Tempted to just order the same but few have started wearing HOKAs. Anyone experienced both or know a similar trainer to the Brooks Ghost in the HOKAs?

Also....finding these running club internal sessions amazing. Tough (like nearly throwing up tough) but oh my....they're getting my fitness back!

I've been plagued by a knee issue. I've been doing a programme from a guy called Ben Patrick (knee over toes guys) and felt massive improvements . I could hardly run 3 mile without pain. I've increased my mileage but the marathon might be too soon
I'm stubbornly carrying on with my marathon programme. I wanted a 15 miler on Monday but my knee was in agony around the 11 mile mark, I made 13.5 miles though. The pain subsided by Wed and I managed another 5 miles and tonight I did 8 miles , (although with slight knee pain). I've done the marathon distance over 4 days with a dodgy knee so I'm proud. I know I should rest but I can't help myself. If I can't achieve my 20 miles a week on Sunday without knee pain it's game over ill carry on strengthening the knee and surrounding muscles and focus towards the latter end of the year.

Tell me about it mate, I cant remember how many i got to but I can't have been far off a pint a mile after london and then the same again the week after, after manchester, stayed in a pub for the mara I did the week after manchester, but it closed before i got back, probably a good thing!! Rehydration is vital in these things

I can't get away with having that many in my rotation but I don't run anywhere near as fast or as many miles as you! I definitely feel the benefit of switching it up though.

I currently have a pair of Pegasus 36 trail for erm... trail runs, Nike ZoomX Invincible for everyday/long runs and I'm on my second pair of Reebok Floatride Energy 3 (picked each pair up for less than 50 quid) for shorter outings and anything up to 12/15km.

@gaz76, I know we've discussed the Vaporflys/Alphaflys before and I should have got a pair at christmas when they were on offer but I went for the Invincibles instead. It's my 40th this month and the missus has said this is my chance if I want to splash out so I've been watching all the reviews (again) and keeping an eye on prices. Just received a 25% discount from Nike for my birthday month so going to go for it. Just a few questions...

Did you go true to size on these? What didn't you like about the Alphas? And how do the Vaporfly 2s compare to the first edition?

I change my mind with every review I watch but would love to experience a super shoe. I have my third marathon in Valencia at the end of the year so would keep them fresh(ish) until then.

End of the day mate you’re getting 15 miles in whilst carrying an injury, it’s no small feat so you should be proud. There’s always going to be time for marathons as long as you keep yourself fit so don’t beat yourself up if it comes too soon. That’s how I’m approaching it anyway.

Funny you should ask about the vaporfly/alphafly conundrum, last week sportsshoes did a one day offer on the alphas, think it was 130ish, I had only bought a pair of vaporfly a few days before but ive been doing lots of overtime at work and found the offer far too tempting.
I decided to go up half a size from the last failed attempt at alphas to hopefully get a better fit...... They didnt even make it out for a test run, just felt far too clunky and not right for my feet at all, back they went!! I think theres a reason most folk are wearing vaporfly now as opposed to alphas, and they are chucking them out on deals on a regular basis.
If your determined to go nike, definitely go for the vaporfly 2, they seem to be a better all round fit than the 1's and even have laces long enough to tie, unlike the first version!! Definitely get them from nike as well, I recieved my refund today off my old vaporfly 1s that had been hammered, but developed a tear so came under their 2 year guarantee.
I know I keep pushing this but the pumas are well worth looking at as a supershoe, Ive only done one run in them so cant say they better than the nikes, but comfort and stability wise they are off to a good start, speed feels like its there as well as I was running fasted on tired legs. Just get a pair and send em back if they no use

The Vaporflys certainly look better and, with the 25% discount, I could get the 2s for under 190€ (about £150) True to size on the Vapors then?

I was looking at the Pumas with the 45% discount but had already set my heart on the Nikes. I'll get them from Nike because the returns policy is great (as you've experienced).

Nice one.
