Running thread

That is some session on a treadmill. I find a 5 minute warm up a chore.
It is torture mate! I use an iPad to watch a film as I'm running and even still it's hard work. I tried going outside but didn't want to risk it on the ice. Also, the treadmill was a good option with my injured leg as it meant I could stop whenever I wanted rather than potentially when I was miles from home!

Its absolutely awful unless you like looking in the mirror. Tried everything, music, podcasts etc but not only do I hate it but I also struggle, or feel like I do, physically.
Lol. Over the last few years, I've managed to assemble a home "gym". From various friends and family I've gratefully received the following items. :- Bullworker, chest expanders, dumbells, hand grippers and some old trampoline parts made into a pull up bar in the garden. Recent additions also include a turbo trainer on which I set up an old bike, speakers to play music and my daughters full length mirror (a bit cracked). All free.

So that's my training plan this winter. Alternate days running and turbo trainer / gym. !!!

Fair play to you. If nothing else it will boost your mental toughness as, from experience, even with my favourite podcasts I cant switch off from the monotony of it all. Good shout on not running in the ice, it will soon pass but a twisted ankle etc will stop you running for a much longer period of time.

Yes the gyn work is a necessary evil. All the science points in that direction and even though its not my natural bedfellow its something I know I need to take seriously.

At the moment its just press ups, glute bridges, few squats and a few yoga stretches. Going to a gym is also a massive de motivator so maybe need to get something rigged up at home also.

12k today in the pouring rain. Two K of canicross with the new dog which was great fun. Hopefully if he takes to it, like I think he will, we can start entering in a few races.

10k in the dark. The run was pretty open to the elements so came back dripping wet, but, like football under the floodlights, something a bit more exhilarating about being out in the dark with the only distractions created by car headlights flashing past.

Wiggle have gone into administration, not sure if the sale on the site is any better because of this, but some good deals on lots of stuff on there, tech, shoes other gear etc

Went out for a Castlefield to Salford Quays circular run this morning out via the Irwell and back via the Bridgewater Canal as I'm back up in Manchester for tonight's Johnny Marr and tomorrow night's Slow Readers Club gigs.
I've started feeling a bit of pain in my left knee, but only when I'm running up inclines (specifically the four footbridges on the Bridgewater approaching Castlefield), but it feels fine on the flat, and no issues doing my post run stretches.
Any idea what's causing this? No pain walking up and down stairs, so just seems to be a running up inclines issue!

Total guess but are you training in different shoes? Or do you just use the same pair? Could be a gait issue?

In this very cold weather I've started doing slightly less miles and taking my time a bit more. I feel going for PBs and extending your normal runs in these conditions is asking for a pulled muscle. So my Saturday 10/12 mile(if I'm not doing a park run) is now a 10k and my 6/7 K midweekers are now 4/5ks. I'm doing this because my muscles felt bruised(if you know what I mean) so I reduced and have been fine since.

From my experience I would say the distance isn't what would cause the injuries - more the pace/effort.

If you can slow down your runs there's no reason why you couldn't maintain (or even increase) the weekly distance.

I think it's running in -3 -4 that's the problem pal, my inner thigh was mega sore after my 10k. I've definitely slowed my pace down and the dropping distance was just self preservation tbh. I just don't want to be pulling anything in this cold when I'm tired. Soon as the cold snap ends I'll up my milage again. Cheers for the advice mucker.

Cold snaps over mate, was 6 degrees this morning, but windy as fuck!!
Each to their own, but I prefer it cold, the air is a lot thinner and once you get warmed up it's great running weather.
Your inner thigh issue didn't come after wearing them there bargain trainers of yours did it?

I love it cold mate, it's the best conditions for me. I just worry about pulling muscles. I'm going tonight straight after work and it's absolutely pissing down. My inner thigh problem was due to my old nikes which are now in the bin :) The new ones are very good, the grip is brilliant. I'm happy with em. Sorry, I've just realised I put 10k instead of Miles. I was referring to a 10 miler I did last week with my nikes.

Cold shower before and you'll have no problems pulling anything mate

I did my first ever Parkrun in 23:07 today. I only started running 5 weeks ago at 48 years old and was struggling to be able to run 5 mins solid when I started. So quite please with that.
Well done! I've set a goal to exercise every day, and after reading this insightful article https://harcourthealth.com/the-power-of-exercise-strengthening-your-brain-and-body/, I finally took the first step towards achieving that today. The article brilliantly highlights the power of exercise in not just strengthening the body but also enhancing the brain. It provided the motivation and information I needed to kickstart my fitness journey.

To go from struggling to run for 5 minutes solid, to a 23:07 5k only 5 weeks later is extremely impressive. Well either that or your telling porkies!

Keep it up and you’ll be faster than Gaz by Christmas!
