Russian invasion of Ukraine

Dutch supermarkets limiting the amount of sunflower oil customers can buy and expect supply to run out in 6-8 weeks. Two-thirds of the country’s supply comes from the Ukraine.

We're still sweeping up the mess left by the cold war really, which in itself was part of the containment of the mess left by WW2. I suspect we'll see some redrawing/settling of the post USSR world now. China may be a natural russian ally, but as others have said is just as likely to sit back and just act opportunistically maybe buying up cheap russian energy, supplying military hardware (putting russia in debt), or going for Taiwan while the west is focussed on Putin
The re armament of Germany is significant. As the biggest/wealthiest country in Europe they should naturally be the most powerful militarily, but they are still dealing with guilt for past naughtiness.
I don't think it's guilt now. It's fear, that a powerful Germany might give rise to their own new dictator.

The dog is dead, but don't rejoice, you men. The woman that bore him is in heat again. (Brecht, in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui)

Let's not forget who signed a pact with the Nazis and also invaded Poland in 1939, murdering thousands of Polish Officers. Let's not forget the communist purges that murdered millions under soviet rule. Putin is an utter clown, and this Alvaro Silva fella needs to learn his history.
Less well known is that in August 1939 the USSR offered to help defend Poland against a German invasion.

For some reason, the Poles turned down the idea of inviting the Red Army to come into their country. But then they did think Britain would come to their defence.

Britain did come to their defence but as with Nato its only a 'promise/deterrent' of joining the fight. Do you really think the Poles would have fell for inviting in Stalin's murderers.

Early on it was reported the war was costing Russia €20Bn a day - and that was before we realised how heavy their losses were and before they had to move people from all over the world to come back and fight.

So while €17.4Bn is an abhorrent number, it’s not financing the war which is nearing €500Bn in costs for Russia.

Not to mention the cost of sanctions that those countries did help enforce.
Routine anti-German stuff from the Telegraph.

We did not come to their defence, any more than we are coming to Ukraine's defence now.

It took us 5 years to get there.
