Russian invasion of Ukraine

Some remarkable reports coming from Ukraine.

Seems the Ukranians have hit a Russian fuel depot 30km *inside* Russia (!!) with a helicopter attack.

Did the copter make it back safely? I hear the Russian squaddies are starving and have taken to eating stray dogs. When Putin hears his crack troops are eating dog burgers he will send ample supplies of his beluga caviar for their muffins!

And the sheer amount of materiel destroyed and villages recaptured is starting to sound like an outright rout, not even a managed Russian retreat.

Of course, some or even most of this might be propaganda, some of it wishful thinking ahead of Russia concentrating it's forces elsewhere, but even if half is true, it's remarkable stuff.

I think there was a Ukranian spokesman claimed the Russians had 3 days supplies left in the North 3 days ago. Looks like maybe they were bang on.

He’s going to feed them muffins ? Another war crime to add to the list.

Even when this ends, which one day God willing it will, the enmity that Russia has created will take generations to dissipate.

It won't end.

This is essentially a war for independence, and if Ukraine wins and comes out with its Sovereignity intact then it will become part of their founding story.

The time when, 100 years after Ukraine first tried to seperate from Russia and failed, they finally fought off the bastards forever and gained the ability to live freely and decide their own futures.

It will get mythologised and become a keystone of Ukrainian identity that they're not Russian.

A long read here (almost 4,500 words) and troubling in some ways. Farida Rustamova is a very talented independent Russian journalist who's currently in exile. This piece is about how sanctions and isolation have created a siege mentality among Russia's elites, making them almost completely united for the first time in a long time. The same mentality is also mirrored to some degree among the general population.

Great read, very insightful- thanks for sharing mate. It doesn’t surprise me that people rally around a leader when they feel entrenched - particularly when they are only hearing one version of events. Unfortunately the west can’t talk to the people of Russia to let them know “why” and “what next”.

That's to be expected, but sanctions are always a 2 pronged attack. The first effect is they stop things happening, we've already heard that Russia's running low on missiles because they haven't been able to make new ones since 2014 over sanctioned parts, and now tank and car factories are shut down. The aviation industry is barely functional and that will effect war efforts.

The second part, making the populace question leadership and stop supporting the war, is always going to take longer.
