I really can't understand a very wealthy man thinking let's start something that will destabilise the world and potentially lead to his ousting / his death or half the world being blown up by nuclear weapons.

You would wouldn't you....but that's the easy way and these type of people dont like/do 'easy' and they wouldn't be where they are now if it was easy. Kind of got to admire these types in a strange way for their tenacity, their organisational capability and their ability to see things through.
