Russian invasion of Ukraine

I was just saying to the wife last night how ridiculous it is that I go onto a football forum to find out what is happening in the most important event of current times.

I don't do Twitter so this thread is my source of news, while the BBC has 200 stories about the Queen and no space or bandwidth for anything much else. And even if it does report on the Ukraine War it is already out of date and so wishy washy that it hardly actually says anything. I even confess to following the Russian Invasion thread on RedCafe, as even that is far ahead of BBC or other mainstream news channels.
I find myself doing the same, well not not red cafe bit. I am amazed at how little news there is regarding this war on the main news channels. There are a number of posters who have a bit of knowledge too which makes it all the more interesting.

What appears to be happening in Ukraine has as much global significance as what is currently consuming domestic news output. Both are seismic events.

strangely this pro putin narrative very popular now. 'they even haven't started yet'

They obviously have millions more young men they could send to die, and have had 6 months to train them.

However based on how poorly equipped and armed their standing army and invasion force was, it’s hard to imagine they’d be that effective. 8 years of microchip sanctions has had a massive effect on their ability to manufacture advanced weapons.

On top of that, conscripting reinforcements raises the domestic political stakes to very dangerous levels, when middle class boys are dying in their thousands then people get deposed.

Chemical or nuclear weapons are not realistically on the table because it would open them up to so much greater responses from the rest of the world. China and India would withdraw their support over nuclear weapons (and Russia would starve) and chemical attacks would give the USA license to give much more advanced long range weapons and drones to prevent another attack.

What would you have done?
Surely the opposite of what you are saying is bad would have been to let Russia rampage though the country killing anyone they wanted and taking over the country.

Is that what you are proposing would have been a favourable solution?
Yes he is.

Licence.

It looks like my long arsed post the other day is pretty much bang on the money.....just a few hours out.
