Russian invasion of Ukraine

Once unimaginable, and unthinkable.

Now a very serious possibility.

Russian invasion of Ukraine has been an un-mitigating disaster from a Russian perspective

Russian defense Minister Sergei Shoigu today warns French Foreign Minister Ukraine is preparing to use a "dirty bomb".

A dirty bomb is a combination of high explosives and nuclear material.

Personally i think it unlikely the Ukrainians are considering using a crudely made nuclear device in a war they are already winning.

More likely the Russians are preparing the narrative of denial afterwards by projecting before using a Nuclear weapon to try stop advancing Ukrainian forces..

This will be a US/NATO red Line crossed. And highly likely escalate the regional conflict in to a full blown World war.Quite possibly a nuclear war.

US has already warned Russia it will sink its Black Sea fleet as part of the retaliation. And directly hit Russian forces.US 101st Airborne Division is already just miles from Ukraine border.

Ukraine crisis is at dangerous tipping point.

Absolutely. Most doctrine and estimates of nuclear war tend to assume use from a position of offensive strength or retaliation rather than first strike from a position of desperation/weakness as you describe. Worth noting that either side have a huge nuclear 'dirty bomb' at their disposal in the shape of blowing up zaporizhzhya npp depending on the prevailing wind.
Proximity of opposing forces also brings us closer to nuclear war as it cuts down the time to think before a response - this is why India/Pakistan is so dangerous. So, us forces so close to Ukraine is not helpful in this respect although at the same time it is of course important to stand up to Putin. The problem with the us is it has a sort of Liverpudlian always offended, never ashamed defense/foreign policy - they can encircle China or push eastwards across Europe for the good of global security and world peace.
