Russian invasion of Ukraine

We are a nuclear power and that in itself is where our defensive strength lies.

The armed forces should be voluntary and professional, regardless of numbers and if worse came to worse and we ended up at war with Russia, we would be a part of NATO and the combined numbers of that organisation and I’ve little doubt, the severity of such a conflict would then naturally call for call ups.

In the meantime, I’ve no issue in a larger MOD budget and a growth in numbers of a voluntary professional tri service.

What's everyone's thoughts on this?
Scaremongering or serious issue.

Both. While it could be considered scaremongering it’s needed as attention needs to be directed back to Russia. They are ramping up there military industry big time and the west / Europe are not.

The west need to realise we need to up our preparations. And if this helps then all good in my view.

The odds of conscription is very low in my view. We (NATO) would have had to lose our airforce and long range weaponry and not have air superiority etc and advantages to get to the point of needed that level of ground forces.

Edit: I removed nukes from the equations

I don't think I've seen this posted in here so apologies if I missed it, but I think it's quite a good summary of how Putin could take Russia to war with NATO.

Rather than going into a populated area, causing Article 5 to be invoked and seeing the full strength of NATO come down on the Russian forces he suggests they might seek to fracture the NATO alliance by going into a low risk, low value area - specifically the north of Finland - and hoping that NATO aren't willing to commit to Article 5 for an area of little value. If they commit to Article 5 he can pull back and if they don't then the entire premise of Article 5 is undermined and he can start chipping away at other areas.

Finland has the biggest artillery in Europe. Russia got their arse kicked in WW2 and would again. Small country, but be very vary.
