It is amazing how the recent US release of the long distance ATACMS is changing things. Here’s hoping the self-imposed restraints are coming off. The vituperative response earlier today by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the call by French President Macron and EU Foreign Affairs Representative, Joseph Borell, for a determined and united EU response to Russia’s outrages in Ukraine is quite telling: “Right now, Europe is playing with fire, it's teetering between peace and war … this is not the EU we joined”. Part of it is for Orban’s own domestic audience but there’s also no doubt that Orban is doing Putin’s bidding

I hope the restraints are coming off, they shouldn’t have been on in the first place. Playing games with Ukrainian lives when Putin sent tanks and bombs into Ukraine. There was a point when Ukraine had the upper hand

Russia has attacked Odesa with ballistic missiles several times this week. Despite anything, people there are baking Easter cakes and treating our Defenders.The video shows only some of the Easter breads that the author of the video gave away at the Odesa railway station, while the rest were sent to the soldiers at the frontlines.

UKRAINE CARRIES OUT WITHDRAWAL

Following the Russian spike offensive exploiting a Ukrainian rotational mistake, the salient as it’s now become, is the focus of endless Russian attacks. However they have turned to the north rather than push west.
This left a key Ukrainian settlement in an unviable position and the Ukrainians decided to carry out an offensive that covered their tactical withdrawal to better lines - and prevent themselves from being captured.
Using a mix of armour and drones with suppressing artillery fire - a notable use of it, suggesting the first aid is getting through, the Ukrainians managed to get away in an orderly manner with minimal losses. The same could not be said for the Russians who suffered major casualties. In fact they became so frustrated with the Ukrainian success and attacks they overloaded the area with artillery and glide bombs, almost inevitably on their own troops in places, but where the Ukrainians had already departed from.
As I said the other day, knowing when, how and where to retreat to in planned and orderly manner is just as vital as knowing how to attack. Crucially the Ukrainians also kept up pressure on Russian rear areas and logistics, ever making it easy for them.
In other news the use of 4 ATACMS on a rear area used for training which resulted in the deaths of at least 100+ soldiers was notable. Video shows at least 3 primary explosions and then the multiple detonation of cluster munitions. If Ukraine was willing to use as many as four missiles for that purpose it rather suggests they have a fairly significant influx of them. If you had just a handful you wouldn’t waste them on something that average. ATACMS also seems to be in use on Crimea, but Russian authorities have clamped down on anyone posting video of anything. The basic warning is if you post something we will find you and we will punish you.
