Russian invasion of Ukraine

Both soldiers got life imprisonment.

A Russian court has sentenced two Russian soldiers to life in prison for killing a family of nine in occupied Ukraine, in a rare example of the country holding its troops to account for alleged war crimes.

The entire Kapkanets family were killed in their home in the Donetsk region last year by Anton Sopov, 21, and Stanislav Rau, 28, prosecutors said. Among the victims were two children aged five and nine.

They'll probably be back on the frontline next week.

Why the fuck should they have to give up any of their land to a tyrant?
Exactly. Other than some sacred mission Putin thinks he's on, it's baffling why the biggest country in the world wants to acquire extra land.
Yes, I know his narcissism and delusions got the better of him and he thought his troops would be welcomed with open arms.
But when Russia has had to go cap in hand to the other loon in North Korea for arms and personnel even he must realise that the game is up. All he's got left now is to run down the West's resources. Or death. Whichever comes first.

Probably one of the last independent judges. I am sure this will be corrected in the near future. They could just return to war of they want anyways.

There are lots of strategic and economic reasons (prima facie) why the eastern parts of Ukraine (including Crimea) if not the entire nation are valuable to Russia, given how fertile the land is and how much Black Sea coastline there is.

As it’s worked out, at least as things stand, it’s ended up costing Russia far more than it could hope to gain, but as you say Putin wasn’t to know that when he invaded, following which he inevitably doubled down.

Even if he retains what he keeps he’s either going to end up with sanctions continuing (and the effects of that aren’t just economic) and/or what remains of Ukraine in NATO (or being afforded protection by NATO) along with Finland and Norway. Either way, Russia’s national standing has been hugely reduced, possibly irreversibly.

There is no way any sensible person could paint any of that as a win for Putin. He’s hugely fucked up, by any objective measure.

Yes, Russia has lost whatever.

Now with Trump, Ukraine will probably lose too.

Putin, though, is just fine, having entrenched his power.

Listening to various reports on Trump and his obvious narcissism I think the way to keep support for Ukraine is to play it that if Ukraine concede it will be written in the history books that it’s a loss for Trump, he won’t like that.
