Russian invasion of Ukraine

So Putin got what he always wanted. Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, whilst the West fiddled.

Don’t think we fiddled at all.

There was always going to be a realisation that Russia alongside the USA is a dominant nuclear power and is simply not beatable anymore in any sort of war because no one is willing to do what is necessary to beat it which is push the button.

Sanctions are not an ever lasting reality either. It’s not how the world works and at some point a normalisation of relations between the west and Russia has to be brought about and sadly, that was always going to mean a carve up of Ukraine with Putin given an “out” that saves his face domestically, doesn’t give him the win he wanted and more importantly saves the bulk of Ukrainian territory and lives and yes, the west money that it is pumping in whilst the costs of the sanctions not only hit Russia, they hit everyone.

Much like the Middle East, at some point it always has to stop and that means someone giving up something they swore they never would.

Putin wanted all of Ukraine and no NATO…

He’s possibly going to finish with some of Ukraine, less Kursk and a hell of a lot more NATO…

Internally his country is fucked. Europe is no longer dependent on his oil. He’s lost millions of young men from the work force. He’s completely destroyed his legacy and has alienated large swathes of the world.

What a fucking win for Vlad, right?

You think things can return to anything vaguely resembling what it was like in February 2022, with Europe being hooked on Russian gas and oil, London being full of Russian millionaires and McDonald’s reopening in Moscow and St Petersburg?

For as long as Putin remains in power there can be no normalisation of relations because all he will do is take advantage of that.

its unravelling for Vlad so he is now a real loose cannon

Commenting on the exchange rate earlier this week, finance minister Anton Siluanov said the weak rouble was "very, very favourable" to exporters. Some commentators have jumped on the remarks, believing it shows the Kremlin is happy to keep the rouble where it is.
Why would any sane person take what a Russian finance minister says at face value?

I've found with proven liars, you take everything they defend as a lie.
This is because they only defend what isn't true.

Whatever the Ukraine agrees to, we need to keep our foot on Putin's throat.
Sanction lifting shouldn't be part of any agreement they come to. Our sanctions aren't anything to do with the Ukraine.. as such.
This is because the threat from Putin goes beyond Ukraine.
