I’ve watched a number of commentators talk about a negotiated settlement to this war in recent weeks, which have understandably intensified since Trump was reelected - and whilst they mostly talk about Ukraine ceding territory, NATO membership and/or security guarantees (whatever the fuck that means) It’s telling that not one has mentioned the sanctions and the frozen assets both of which, presumably, will need some form of resolution as part of any ‘deal’.
The silence is deafening on a topic that surely must be central to any agreement. And, as I’ve posted before, what is the answer to the issue of sanctions? That Russia will be welcomed back into the fold like a naughty child? As long as they promise not to do it again? That trading relations will be resumed with the rest of Europe, which will enable Russia to rearm more quickly than if the sanctions remained in place? So they can go again in a few years?
Facing up to military reality is one thing but how is this issue going to be addressed in a way that all parties can live with? And where European politicians don’t look utterly foolish.
Personally, if Ukraine was forced to give up land then I simply don’t want any western nation to deal with Russia again, and I expect I’m not alone in thinking that. They need to be isolated from the more civilised world as a consequence of their actions.
They cannot be seen to profit from their conduct and I would be fucking fuming if we capitulated on this.
