FRONTLINE UPDATE
The situation in Kursk is deceptive. According to respected mappers, the Ukrainians have been squeezed by successful but high loss Russian attacks in the SW corner. In addition the pressure of the Russian/Korean attacks - again high loss - in the NW corner have made inroads.
Russian counter attacks against the area in the SE Ukraine took in the past couple of weeks, have been facing pressure from groups of Russians accumulating in the forested area south of Ukraine’s positions.
The mappers view of this as against the propaganda view from Ukrainian sources just don’t match, and I trust the independent mappers more.
Ukraine has been successful in retaking the Koltyne mine in the NW corner of the Pokrovsk front. This is important and also underlines Russian complaints about chronic manpower shortages in that area as well as lack of equipment.
Russian forces Continue to advance north of Kupiansk, as well as in the south where the Russians make regular sizeable gains in the vast open areas of fields and woodland. However the Ukrainians have mounted counter attacks in Toretsk and Chasiv Yar which have taken the Russians aback.
One area that continues to be endlessly problematic is the area around Bilahorivka. This has been fought back and forth since mid 2022. The terrain is complex with high ground and rivers running in valleys that open up eastward to a wide vast sandy plain mixed with quarries and swamps. It’s a key area because if Russia takes it they have an opening to march westward and it unpins a large area - and I believe it would mean all of Luhansk would be Russian.
Overall the Russians have largely culminated their offensive - more out of exhaustion than desire, but they still take ground and they haven’t stopped everywhere.

The hope is that the framework agreement today will allow Trump to declare a success and allow a good cooperation between Ukraine and the US going forward.
