Ryan Bertrand

Sceptical on Bertrand.

Would he get in Real Madrid's team? Would he get in Bayern Munich's team? Would he get in Barcelona's team?

The answer is no. If he is being bought as a squad player fair enough, but if he is being bought as first choice. No thanks. I want better than just adequate.

Would Kompany? Or Aguero? It's a non-argument.

Is Bertrand a good option for us is the only question Pep, and we, should be asking. I feel the answer could be yes.

Agreed - you have to have a number of options and you have to be prepared to weigh up what can be done and what might be able to be done and make your moves accordingly.

a lot of our players wouldn't get into madrids side. i think its ridiculous to say the only players we can buy are ones that get into those teams. betrand is very good prem left back. and apparently for 20m thats a bloody good price.

I rate Bertrand. If we got him and Mendy we'd be sorted at left back for some time.

No qualms with this deal, a good LB at a good price. Homegrown to boot.

Nothing to dislike about this deal, signing a world class LB is incredibly difficult as there are so little of them playing at the minute, never mind actually being able to sign one of them.

Mendy and Bertrand would be a great pair of signings.

I've no problem with us signing a player like Bertrand but the one thing that annoys me is the rumoured wages. '...the Southampton man would more than double his £55,000 a week salary.' Why?

If we are signing players from mid table sides like Southampton they should be desperate for the opportunity to play for a side like us challenging for all the top honours. Why should we more than double his wages? We are not he team of 10years ago where we had to offer the money just to attract players. We are among the top sides in Europe but seem to keep making the same mistake of paying high transfer fees and inflated wages and then struggle to offload those players where it doesn't work out (Nolito being the latest example). World class players already at top clubs in the Champs League will expect top wages and I get that. Surely if we say to someone like Bertrand and his agent that we'll pay him £70k a week and if he is successful he has the potential to increase this up to the level of the established players at the club he would still accept and be incentivised to perform? If he isn't successful we can still offload without massively over inflated wages. Why do we continue to be mugs in the transfer market?

If we are after him it is because he has skills we need and he will improve us. The fact he isn't on a huge wage at Southampton is irrelevant.
