Ryan Bertrand

How can anyone describe any of England's defenders as great last night? It was a collective shambles with the full backs terrified by the pace of the French forwards.

Except for Bertrand you mean? He was solid, got forward to link up well and was never once beaten on the outside by any of the French players. Much better than Mendy was but i suppose his names not exotic enough for most on here.

Bertrand sounds quite exotic if you say it with a French accent.

He put a great ball in for England's goal, but the entire England defence were destroyed by the pace of France''s football. How anyone can claim he had a great game is beyond me.

The defence was a shambles but the midfield two of Oxlade Chamberlain and Dier were the cause of the problem - they were woeful from the first minute - I lost count how often the two of them gave the ball away. England don't have a great group of players but Southgate is truly hopeless. I wouldn't book more than 10 days if you are planning a trip to the next World Cup to follow Ingerlaaaand

I agree with you. I didn't think Bertrand was any better or worse than any other defender. I couldn't let the comment that Bertrand was great go. That's just nonsense

No player should be judged on the back of an England performance. The national team is shite, will always be shite and seems to only have the ambition to continue being shite.

Southgate is about as tactically astute as Lee Cattermole. Played a system only one of the defenders was familiar with, and that man was Gary Cahill, hardly a man capable of marshaling the back line. He played the Ox and Dier in front of the defence, yeah fine fair enough, but it was obvious after the first 15 minutes that this was leaving huge holes and simply allowing Dembele and Mbappe to showcase their pace and skill. Does he change it? Nah let's play walker out of position on the left instead.

Stones gets absolutely slaughtered by the fans, and its true he didn't have a great game at all, but for the second goal at least Jones and Cahill seemed to be playing stuck in the mud, which allowed Dembele to go 1v1, and forces Stones to try something in a situation he was bound to lose. Great thanks England, knock the lads confidence just as he's coming back from injury.

It pains me that our players have to spend any time at all with England. Going from a City, and especially a Pep training session, to one with England must be like stepping out of a post-grad physics lecture and into Year 8 applied science.

Having said that, France were excellent and simply far better than us, even with bags of confidence and a great manager they may still have won.

Sorry rant over with.

Southgate is a tactical dinosaur who put out a team system that would have been old 50 years ago.

Any good performances players have under him is purely coincidental

He's not even a proper dinosaur like Fat Sam - he's been appointed England Manager but his CV is shocking - a short unsuccessful spell at Boro and a bit of time with the England u21s - where the better players are never available. The FA are a disgrace - there are 100s of people in the UK better qualified than Southgate whos only attributes seem to be he's cheap and a 'yes' man.

No it's not nonsense at all. He was the best of the defenders by a long shot. As for the team, the defence was hung out to dry by the middle 2, if you know anything about the game you'd see that.

England need to pick their first choice defence and give them a chance to develop an understanding together. They seem to chop and change every game, and it doesn't work every game no matter who the players are.

Not too bothered about Stones performance last night, he wasn't that bad. Expect a big improvement from him in the games that count (ie for us) next season. Hopefully get a bit of game time alongside Vinny, that seems to help any defender.

Completely agree. I couldn't give two shits how anyone plays for England, they're a complete waste of space. I thought Bertrand was okay, Dele Alli was totally and utterly shite, Cahill was god awful, Kane started off terribly but got a little bit better and so on and so on.

And?

They're decent players for their club teams but the national setup has been fucked for a long while and will remain that way for even longer. Why anyone would judge a player off those performances is beyond me.

Any manager who would pick that midfield two should be sacked on the spot. This guy is well out of his depth and should be replaced.

The more I look at Stones the more worried I get. At best he might be useful in a back three but I just don't see him as a commanding figure in the same mold as Vinny.
