Ryder Cup 2025

That's true and Long Island is particularly bad. At the same time I'm a New Yorker and I've been playing golf my whole life, and even by NY standards it was way over the line. It's one thing to be loud and obnoxious at a hockey game or whatever, but trying to disrupt someone's swing and the personal nature of what was being said was disgraceful, particularly at a fucking golf tournament which is theoretically based around sportsmanship between allied countries.
Isn't Long Island one of the more affluent districts?

A lot of non New Yorkers on social media distancing themselves from the oiks who were at Bethpage Black. New Yorkers have a reputation for being gobby fuckers. It seemed to be far worse than Brookline or Kiawah Island.
So it was probably a deliberate tactic to stage it in NY, in order to gain an advantage from the hostile crowd. I hope both teams work on this to make subsequent events more sportsmanlike, because the Ryder Cup is one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world. It shouldn't be spoilt by boorish yobs.

Well done Tom Watson for your comments. Another example of a true sportsman.

My lad thought he might win the sportsmanship award named after Nicklaus/Jackson. Thank goodness Tommy Fleetwood won it, though I'm not sure what feat of sportsmanship he displayed. Maybe it was for stopping that other knob from attacking Rose.

Oh for someone with the true statesmanship of the universally respected Jack Nicklaus in this day and age.

Fleetwood is universally respected too.

It's mixed. Some parts are extremely affluent, but there's a lot of tract housing (Levittown) and middle-income suburbs. But it's a brasher culture regardless of income. Trump is from Queens which is at the western end of Long Island.

If they had held the tournament at one of the private Long Island clubs, Shinnecock Hills or the like, I think the atmosphere would have been very different. Those places will toss you for not tucking in your shirt. Bethpage is a public course without strict rules and I don't think they knew how to strike the balance between a "passionate" tournament and a circus.

It shouldn't be held in NY again. Given the locals' reputation (a section of them, anyway) along with a visit from the village idiot during the tournament, along with all day on the sauce, there was always a chance of it kicking off. As for Watson; he's old school. The likes of him, Nicklaus and Trevino could never possibly understand the thinking behind such vile abuse. Much less condone it. I notice, however, that Bradley was lukewarm in his criticism of the fans. It speaks volumes.

Touch of class from Tom Watson

Aah! Exactly the appropriate kind of gesture I was hoping for. It does not surprise me it comes from Watson. He always struck me as one of the old-school Americans in sports, with a winner's mentality, but courteous and fair. (Nicklaus was another of that breed).
But I may be wrong, I didn't know that much about him.

Touch of class from Tom Watson

My friend played in a group behind him on a public course near Pebble Beach and got to talk to him after the round - said he was a super-nice guy, which is the way he always comes across. He's also got some affinity for Europe having been embraced so warmly by the British crowds during his five Open wins.

and he knows how to behave in public

A rare away win for a team that the US players said would “have their asses kicked.”
Luke Donald pinned such a quote on the locker room wall. Tee hee.

I know money rules and nobody wants to burn their fingers in a big decision,
but imagine how the US will look like in 4 years?...

Don't we have enough top golfers in Canada, Aussie, NZ, SA, Japan for a more respectful "continental" competition holding up the right values which are more important than ever nowadays?

Europe wouldn't play such an event vs Russia or China in any sports.
The US have to make up their mind where they stand. (Well, they did.)

Ryder Cup has a great history, but times have changed.
I would give it a rest to show them it just doesn't work that way
until we get back to the honourable format it once was.

Queens and Brooklyn are geographically on Long Island but are 2 of the 5 NY boroughs. Bethpage is in Nassau County, which is east of Queens. Nassau County is reasonably affluent, but not as affluent as Suffolk County (home of the Hamptons) to its east.

Nice concept, but the Ryder Cup is just too big to abandon it even postpone. They need to work on returning it to a respectful competition between great golfing superpowers.

They need big crowds though, and they now need to learn how to control them.

Players can play a big part in this. I think the wild celebrations after winning a point, or even more so when clinching the result, are expressions of a massive release of tension that has been building for hours. But after that, be gracious in victory, as well as defeat. Show the spectators that golf is the most important thing.

It’s mostly being blown out of proportion.

Sport is today marketed as being of the utmost importance to generate ticket sales, TV viewership and therefore sponsor revenue. Places and venues piggyback onto this and benefit from it.

You can’t therefore sell such a product and expect to be able to entertain and fuel visitors with alcohol without the negatives. The more fuel, the more fire.

Fans of course shouldn’t be getting abusive and certainly not towards family members of the players, but the golfers themselves should just wear noise-cancelling headphones at the tee or on the green to mitigate it. Let the authorities manage the drunks.

People complain about football being too sanitised but now want to sanitise a great sporting competition. Make your minds up!

McIlroy shouldn’t have responded really. This competition isn’t for the fainthearted unfortunately.
