Saddest songs.

This thread sent me off on a loooong rabbit hole and i have realised i have a guilty pleasure in sad, soppy and often cheesy songs.

Also, many sad songs are really uplifting.

Dunno if this is sad...certainly melancholy...(this is the shorter version rather than the full length version from War of the Worlds)

Not the most common of topics for a band to sing about...

Lesley Anne Levine by the Decemberists....the story of a mother and child dying in childbirth in the 19th Century...beautiful song nonetheless

My name is Leslie Anne Levine
My mother birthed me down a dry ravine
My mother birthed me far too soon
Born at nine and dead at noon
Fifteen years gone now, I still wander this parapet
And shake my rattled bone
Fifteen years gone now, I still cling to the petticoat
Of the girl who died with me

On the roof above the streets
The only love I've known is a chimney sweep
Lost and lodged inside a flue
Back in 1842
Fifteen years gone now, I still wail from these catacombs
And curse my mother's name
Fifteen years gone now, still a wastrel mescalined
Has brought this fate on me

My name is Leslie Anne Levine
I've got no one left to mourn for me
My body lies inside its grave
In a ditch not far away
Fifteen years gone, I still wander this parapet
And shake my rattled bone
Fifteen years gone now, I still cling to the petticoat
Of the girl who died with me

Who died with me
Who died with me
Who died with me

Testimony of Patience Kershaw, based on the actual evidence given by the young Patience Kershaw before the Government Commission of Enquiry into Child Labour in 1842.

The whole song is moving but the last verse always has me in tears.

I praise your good intentions, Sir, I love your kind and gentle heart
But now it's 1842, and you and I, we're miles apart.
A hundred years and more will pass before we're standing side by side
But please accept my grateful thanks. God bless you Sir, at least you tried.
