Safe standing / operation one end

You'll still not be able to meet up with your mates on a match-by-match basis and stand where you want.

Half true, if you and your mates have ST's for the standing section then you will be able to gravitate towards being together, whereas with seating there is little chance of getting large groups together like in the old days of the back corner of the Kippax

would have to be allocated imo.

The biggest problem will be people abusing the system and therefore it kicking off with stewards who will be sent in to sort it out.

it would also mean relocation of away fans for away games, surely?

I think the only way it will be done for us is as part of stadium upgrades, and it would have to a specific design feature with contingencies to meet all other issues that arise from it.

it's alright at villa, they can just rip out the 15,000 empty seats that McLeish has gained them with his shite football in the past 5 months.

safe standing is a good idea but would only work in the south stand as moving it to the family stand would be to much re aranging

One reason it won't happen is because it is now believe it or not a law that you cannot smoke in stadia in this country (you would never know, apart from the amount on here who continue to do so and then blame everybody else when they get caught).

If standing was allowed all fans would be ncely packed together and thus stopping stewards getting to the fans who were smoking in the crowd, what! nobody would smoke or others would hand them in.... sorry but you are deluded if you think that would happen.

I really believe from discussions I have had with colleagues that ths would be one reason why it won't be brought back anytime in the near future.

Have to disagree there. CCTV would still pick up the smokers and the stewards / police can go and deal with it at half time / end of game.
Also fans wont be tightly packed in (we are not talking of terraces but safe standing areas of rows with barriers every two steps.) Police / stewards can simply ask those nearest to them to move out of the row for a few seconds whilst the get the person they want out.
Do people smoke whilst standing in seats? I've seen no evidence of that at home games

Aston Villa have launched plans to open a safe-standing area at their Villa Park ground.

The club hope to put forward their proposal at a meeting of the Premier League later this season.

But even if their bold proposal was given the green light, Villa would require a change in law to open the stand

Villa are examining the introduction of ‘rail seats’, which have been used effectively at German club Borussia Dortmund and across Europe.

These are flip-up seats which are UEFA compliant and can accommodate seated supporters during designated all-seater matches or be stowed away to create a standing area at other times.

The Scottish Premier League last month gave its clubs permission to have safe-standing areas within their stadiums.

Brilliant news - well done Villa.

Just a quick note - it doesn't require a change in law. There is no legislation on standing, but it is a Government regulation that can be reversed without a bill to remove it.
It would also need the Premier League to change their all seated stadium rule too which needs 14 clubs to vote for it.

I saw two lads who sneaked there pints into the stand on monday there was noway they could of been spotted drinking them by a steward so Im certain CCTV caught them out. Its not easy to be descreet about smoking because you can follow the smoke

Yes fans do smoke judging by the amount of cig butts seen in certain standing sections at end of game, quite easy to duck down when having a crafty drag, and all that can be seen ids a smoke cloud from a general direction.

As for fans moving ouy of the way, completely the opposite happens as happened with the Showsexc steward rumpus that occurred in 109.

It's started.

Expect other clubs to follow if it's approved by the Government and Premier League. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/aston-villa-fc/aston-villa-news/2012/01/17/aston-villa-set-to-bring-back-terrace-standing-area-at-villa-park-97319-30138906/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingha ... -30138906/</a>
