Safe Standing: Rail Seating in South Stand

When I heard about rail seating I was getting exited that I wouldn’t have to get off the train at ashburys and the train would take us straight into the ground whilst watching the match from the viewing carriage...;)

In other words we will tell you to sit down but you can ignore us if you like?

Or.

City can ask the fans to sit down, but they can’t force them to sit down en-masse.

Which has always been the case, not just at City, but also at other clubs.

Yes, clubs will deploy stewards and security guards every now and again to show they are trying to comply with seating regulations. But it’s expensive, causes problems, and ultimately fails. All it does is upset and angers fans.

There are many ways to look at it, but the club has to be seen to be adhering to seating rules and regulations, whilst at the same time trying to get safe standing installed.

It’s a bit of cat and mouse with the authorities.

They should rail seat the entire family stand so it puts off all those part time early leavers

Can't say I'm surprised, I'm supportive of the move, but it's a drop in the ocean really, and isn't approved by government, and won't increase capacity by much if any.
The government are broadly supportive of safe standing, as long as there's solid evidence that it's at least as safe as the current arrangement. The SGSA has done a preliminary study that suggests it's safer, as it mitigates against a potential crowd collapse with people falling over seats. They're continuing to study it so the more rail seating areas there are, the more evidence they can collect.

The Daily United are reporting it, as well as other football websites.

Manchester City are set to install over 5,000 rail seats at the Etihad as club chiefs look to follow Spurs and Wolves by introducing safe standing with work to be completed for next season

  • Manchester City are set to start work on installing more than 5,000 rail seats
  • City will refit the entire bottom tier of their South Stand for the construction
  • They are looking to follow Spurs and Wolves by introducing the rail seats
