Well, during the Battle of Hastings and Stamford Bridge, English soldiers were seen to be fighting under one banner, the wyvern of Wessex, and it has been seen repeatedly on these shores since the "Anglo-Saxons" (which is a Victorian term they used to demean the "Pagan" English; they never called themselves that, they just called themselves 'English', but for the sake of discussion i'll stick with it) tribes brought it with them.There would not of been a national flag of england anyhow ,if there ever was until Atbelsten united the seven kingdoms.
It's fair to say, at least, that the Wyvern can be accepted as one of the first if not the first nationally accepted banner of England and the English. Long before the whole Crusades and acceptance of St George palaver, which Urban Genie pretty much covered.
