Saint George of England.

There would not of been a national flag of england anyhow ,if there ever was until Atbelsten united the seven kingdoms.
Well, during the Battle of Hastings and Stamford Bridge, English soldiers were seen to be fighting under one banner, the wyvern of Wessex, and it has been seen repeatedly on these shores since the "Anglo-Saxons" (which is a Victorian term they used to demean the "Pagan" English; they never called themselves that, they just called themselves 'English', but for the sake of discussion i'll stick with it) tribes brought it with them.

It's fair to say, at least, that the Wyvern can be accepted as one of the first if not the first nationally accepted banner of England and the English. Long before the whole Crusades and acceptance of St George palaver, which Urban Genie pretty much covered.

You're talking about Harold Godwinson, right, not Alfred The Great?

'Cos Alfie, he damn beat those Vikings!

Anyhoo, getting sidetracked. Fact is St George AND St Edmund are both CHRISTIAN saints, and the Christians in England chose to oust Eddie and adopt Georgy instead, for political reasons mostly.

I subscribe more to Germanic Pagan England (Tiw, Woden, Thunor, Freyja, and the traditions connected with them, Eostre, Midsummer, Blotmonath, Winterfylleth, Yule etc) so Edmund or George, means little to me. You wish to choose Edmund as your Patron Christian Saint, feel free. You follow Georgie Boy, more power to you.

but only after a long guerilla war.
Only English King to be called a "great "
He aslo wanted his subjects to be educated and know how to read and write. Considered just and not hot-headed. Winner in my book.
