He divided West Ham fans when he joined because of his media reputation of playing negative football and when he laughed off the 'west Ham way' some fans mostly lacking brain cells never gave him the benefit of the doubt - first season in the Championship with a depleted team, he made some very astute signings Faye and Diop made us strong at the back something we lacked under Zola and Grant, Marty Taylor, Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison (funny that for not liking creative football) and the most important signing Kevin Nolan, pure leadership on the pitch, would scream at our own players all game long, scored vital goals - whilst the Championship isn't glorious we had our good times, beating teams 5/6-0 at times and got to the Playoff Final, a great day for us Hammers.
The next season, back in the Prem and it was bloody brilliant, Jarvis, Joe Cole, Matty Taylor and Andy Carrol - we finished top 10. Incredible turnaround for our club when we could so easily have been a Leeds, Sheff Utd etc - we were lucky to have him two more seasons, beating the likes of Liverpool, City, Chelsea along the way, both seasons finished mid table, couple decent cup runs and leaving the club when he's contract run out with a cracking squad and in Europe. It wasn't all glamorous, yes at times we 'parked the bus' and hit it long - but sometimes you can only work with what you got and Sam knew that best, other times we played some really good football going 2 up front - Sakho and Valencia other times Carrol as the lone striker. He would change the formation depending on the opposition.
For the moaning brigade, I laugh now that when ever we lose now it's the owners fault and not the manager and as for entertainment it was far worse under Bilic this season that at anytime under Sam, but because Bilic isn't Fat and English and has a closer connection to the club he gets a free ride.
