According to UEFA’s own guide, VAR may overrule a referee’s decision in “factual” cases – i.e. offsides, fouls in or outside the penalty area.

But the referee must make the final decision in infringements that are subjective – like the Otamendi ‘handball’ – and so the broken monitor throws into doubt whether VAR had the authority to overrule the original call.

UEFA are expected to release a statement.

Now that’s up for debate yeah I agree.
It shouldn't be up for debate at all, that is how VAR in the CL is supposed to work, it shouldn't be given from UEFA headquarters. We were being fucked over tonight when our goal went to VAR, "City have scored, so lets find a reason not to give it" took nearly 2 minutes, when it was clearly a legit goal.

Under next seasons rule change it’s a pen - this season it has to be deliberate and the only movement his arm makes in that split second is away from the ball.

I thought his arm moved slightly outwards before it moved in. It’s the VAR taking so long that’s the problem for me.

Today confirms why we have to stop booing the Champions League Anthem. It just gets UFFA's backs up before a ball has been kicked. Now they have VAR to use as a weapon against us.

They were looking for any reason to rule out our 1st goal. Then their 1st penalty was never going to go our way despite Otamendi trying to get his arm out of the way.

Please!

So you think the booing caused the monitor to fail, and for the VAR officials to force the Referee to give the penalty without seeing it again on the monitor.

Dear God!

Tonight the lads beat UEFA, VAR, The ref, cheats, 14 men, corruption, etc etc. Amazing win that. But I suspect its not a patch of what they will face in the games ahead.

Why we need to keep booing it you mean.

So why was Raz's goal not ruled out for the nudge on the defender?

So irritating how short the BT highlights are.. 13 minutes for a 5 goal match?

ITV would spend about half hour on a 0-0 Chelsea game away to Spartak Moscow ffs.

It might have helped the BT Otamendi penalty discussion if they’d played it a normal speed as well as slow motion. At normal speed it would have been much easier to judge whether he had time to move his arm out of the way. Peter Walton seemed to base his opinion on the slow motion only.
